Different and Better

I have reviewed, read and used practically hundreds of jazz methods and I can honestly say that NONE of them are like How to Improvise. Where other authors overly concern themselves with which scale to play on which chord or memorizing ii V I licks in every key, Crook teaches us how to play music.
Each chapter deals with a different musical aspect such as pacing, phrase lengths, time, dynamics and articulation. There's a text description of each topic followed by a comprehensive regime of exercises dealing specifically with that topic.
A lot of what's wrong with the jazz playing of young musicians could easily be fixed with this one book. I know it made a huge impact in my playing and my career. With Crook's book, I was able to take all of the technique I learned from other books and turn it into something people actually like to listen to. For that, I can't thank him enough.

Terrific Resource!

Hal Crook's "How to Improvise" is an absolutely indispensable resource for developing jazz vocabulary and improvisation. Although he presumes a certain amount of basic knowledge of jazz theory, Hal's jazz exercises are terrific and well organized. Learning how to improvise is often an overwhelming process, and beginning jazz players find it hard to take a structured approach to learning jazz. This is the best resource I have seen - it is comprehensive! Buy it now, don't wait 5 years (like I did) to save the $25 only to come back to it. Another jazz resource I would recommend is Jamey Abersold's "Turnarounds: Vol. 16," which is a great way to learn to improvise over chord changes in all keys.

Don't let the title fool you, lots of great stuff in here for anyone of all levels. Not just what it has to go over (great stuff), also a schedule and how to go about it. That's how things get done and gauge results.
