Good resource

I find myself turning to this book more and more. As a new crocheter it is helpful to have each stitch broken down this way and the explanations of how one stitch relates to another is valuable. The illustrations and sample photos are great. Between this book and a number of YouTube videos (mostly from Meladora's Creations), I've managed to teach myself to crochet in fairly short order and now I have a fun new hobby. Yay for crochet!

I foresee many happy hours of stitching! This book is very detailed, & includes the stitch diagrams (for those who read them - I prefer instructions in words). Many of the patterns are very similar, & the author explains the differences. I feel it's a great book for those are interested in the beauty of crocheted stitching.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810–1865) was a English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Gaskell was also the first to write a biography of Charlotte Bronte, The Life of Charlotte Bronte, which was published in 1857. "The first formal right hepatectomy was reported by Lortat-Jacob and Robert in 1952. Before that time surgeons tried to steer clear of liver sugery because of the risk of uncontrollable haemorrhage and the operative mortality rate of at least 20 percent. However a widening knowledge of segmental hepatic anatomy described by Couinaud in 1957, and elaborated by Bismuth in 1982, led to the development of safe resectional techniques for the various major segments of the liver so intraoperative deaths have become rare events in elective liver surgery. The techniques of hepatobiliary surgery have developed rapidly and the subject is now recognised as a subspecialty in its own right to encompass very advanced procedures such as transplantation from living, related donors, split liver transplantation and neonatal liver replacement. This book (dedicated to the memory of Professor Gozzetti of Bologna) is an atlas of every type of surgical technique applicable to liver surgery and is based on the work of the surgical department in Bologna over more than 15 years. A brief summary of current concepts of hepatic anatomy is followed by descriptions of the standard methods of liver resection as well as the more unusual and difficult operations designed to resect single segments such as the caudate lobe (segment 1), segment 4 or segment 8. Other topics include total vascular occlusion of the liver, which is a very valuable surgical technique for extensive tumours, intraoperative ultrasound, portal embolisation and the management of trauma. The surgery of cystic disease of the liver and tumours of the bile ducts is included and almost one third of the volume is devoted to a comprehensive review of the techniques of liver transplantation. I appreciated the inclusion of discussions on possible technical complications in many of the sections, especially as the authors detail the methods of management. These comments are valuable and extremely useful for any newcomer to liver s rgery. As a minor criticism I would have preferred the more general sections of the text to have been grouped at the beginning of the book to form an introduction to the chapters concerned with resectional techniques. It seems a little unusual to describe and illustrate all of the standard operations before introducing a discussion on the general principles of liver resection in section 14, and the indications for liver resection in section 18. Throughout the text there are references to the results of the various operations, but these are, of necessity, rather restricted in scope and the reader would have to refer to other texts for further data. The superb quality of the illustrations, produced in the department of anatomy of Bologna, provides the outstanding feature of this book, although it was a little disappointing to find that the section devoted to the resection of tumours of the extrahepatic bile ducts was not illustrated in the same manner and the intraoperative photographs used in this chapter lack the clarity of the illustrations in the other sections. A potential purchaser of a book on liver resection can now choose from a wide range of texts but in my opinion this book should be high on the list. The technique of illustration avoids the simplification of the more usual type of line diagram and avoids the lack of clarity which often accompanies the reproduction of intraoperative photographs. It really does give a good impression of the 'feel' of liver surgery and does not avoid discussion of the potential hazards. Furthermore although the book was designed primarily as a manual for liver surgeons I am sure that any gastroenterologist with an interest in liver medicine would appreciate the illustrations both as an extremely useful guide to the current surgical repertoire of liver surgery and as an extremely fine example of the art of the medical illustrator." - Reviewed by E. Helped me learn a lot, but nubes might have issues

I found this book very helpful. After hearing about how effective the previous versions were, I was really excited to try the new edition! I just hope now that the rest of the series will be remade soon.
Over all, the book was structured very well. Information was presented clearly,simply, and accurately. Sometimes, however, explanation of the grammar points were WAY too simple- which, in several instances, would have certainly been misleading to a beginning learner with no previous knowledge of Korean. Fortunately, I dove into this book having already studied Korean for 6 months so I already had a decent understanding of the language to know that some explanations were lacking (I checked things with my Korean friends too).
For me, this book basically served as an excellent way to review what I had learned and to go beyond with new material. I definitely benefited from the abundant vocabulary provided- although I would have preferred it to be presented using pictures along with the definitions, but that's just me. Also a great help were the "pronunciation" tips at the bottom of pages which had confusing-to-pronounce vocab words.
One noteworthy problem I had was that, sometimes, the directions for the writing exercises were so unclear that I had absolutely no idea about what to write in the blanks. Sometimes what the questions were asking was completely unrelated to the grammar that was presented in the lesson. Both of these issues combined, however, didnt occur more than 4 times, so it didn't bother me too much.

This book is great and I highly recommend it, however it contents are will be the most useful to one who already understands the basics of Korean, not a complete beginner, which is unfortunate to say because the hangul learning/writing lessons and super basic conversation and grammar lessons in the beginning of the book are excellent for those with no former knowledge of the language. The more complex grammar in the middle and towards the end are a totally different story.

Over the past years I have had the pleasure of working in Korea at some remote locations where English is not used. Therefore to survive I purchased a number of Korean language books, cassettes and CD's. In short they were either so americanised even the Koreans in Korea could not understand the so called Korean learning recordings. To add more frustration the material was not of a general use as the course summary said.
Guided by a Korean friend I purchase the "Korean Through English" books with Tapes and CD's. Without assistance I studied books 1 & 2 and worked the CD's. The literature is easy and clear to follow, I have completed book 1 and started book 2 (set of 3). The books learning's are used daily in Korea, when I use my Korean in Korea the locals understand me and the learning's were of such a nature that it was very useful. What is nice, as the locals can understand my intent they are more than willing to help me with my pronunciation.

After 28 years I still consult the same Castellan

I bought his Physical Chemistry 2nd Edition book in December 1973. Everytime I need some insight to a dificult concept I read this book. His part in thermodynamics in unsurpassed, for I have not found such a clear explanation and derivation of the Second Law as his. The same goes for the Structure of Gases and Quantum Mechanical principles.
This book is a treasure. Some time ago I changed the original soft cover to hard, and lined it with brown leather and golden letters.

Great P-Chem text- way better than Atkins

For most students, P-Chem is one of the most challenging courses in the chem curriculum. I was no exception. In undergrad, I had a weekly standing appointment with my P-Chem 2 prof. The text we used was terrible, in my opinion (Atkins and dePaula). Towards the end of that course, I discovered this text by Castellan. Encouraged by positive reviews, I gave it a shot. It really made a difference- the clear explanations, the mathematical interludes etc. I was also able to use it for my graduate Chemical Kinetics course. Not only was it clearer, but it was far more comprehensive than Atkins. I think this just might be one of the best P-Chem texts out there. Highly, highly recommended.

In my opinion this book remains one the best written on the field.In fact, it deals with the important topics in an elegant way. The first part is dedicated to the basic termodinamical concepts. This part just needs a little mathematical background but i must say in some ocasions it can become boring (just a little). Once you have red this part wich deals comes (in the middle of the book) the introduction of quantum mechanics. I feel the autor has reached his purprose of telling you the essential without complicating things. To my mind,really well done!!. just say i don't find enough information about group theory ( it is necesary to know a lot of it when you have reached an intermidiate-advanced level in quantum mechanics), but this must be forgiven for the book is intended for undergraduate students essentially.

About the Author

Richard Robbins received his Ph.D. in anthropology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has spent his entire teaching career at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  Some of his most formative academic experiences include field research among Cree, Inuit and Naskapi First Nations peoples of Canada, Acadian farmers and fisherfolk in New Brunswick, Canada, and among religious communal societies in the United States.  A research semester at the Science Studies Unit at the University of Edinburgh would count as one of his most stimulating intellectual experiences. 

 

He has received the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the American Anthropological Association/McGraw-Hill Teacher of the Year Award.  He appeared also in the hit anti-globalization documentary, The Yes Men.  He is currently SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at Plattsburgh, and maintains a global problems website at www.plattsburgh.edu/legacy and a general website at faculty.plattsburgh.edu/richard.robbins.  He can be contacted by email at richard.robbins@plattsburgh.edu.

Great textbook!

At last: a textbook which confronts the cultural power of capitalism. Robbins looks at how capitalism shapes cultures and how it has evolved into the most powerful cultural influence on the planet. A great resource for anthropology, geography, or history. Not your run of the mill textbook, it offers forceful critiques and compelling history. An excellent book for college students.

way overpriced but worth reading

I've given this three stars simply because it would have to be astounding good to be worth $77, and it's not. It is very good however, and if the price was more like $20 of less, which would be reasonable for an oversized paperback, I would have given it 5 stars. Evidently, because it's a textbook the publisher can get away with this. However, I happened to find a used copy at a college bookstore, and felt I should get it because I have been wanting to better understand globalism, CAFTA, NAFTA, the WTO and the protests against it, the World Bank and how it both helps and interferes, the jobs that are being outsourced to Asia (btw, last time I spoke to Amazon customer service, it was with someone in India!), the seemingly endless reach and power of certain multi-national corporations, etc., and I thought this book would fit the bill. I haven't finished it yet, but it certainly does, and I've been learning a lot from reading it. Thought it definitely has a point of view, I feel it's a more balanced introductory book than the many highly opinionated books written by particular economists and think-tankers who are inevitably trying to persuade rather than educate.

Excellent Critique of the Free Market in the 21st Century

I am a high school economics teacher. This book clearly presents some of the complicated problems unregulated free market capitalism has created. I have used it as a resource in several classroom activities as a balance to the oversimplified perspective high school textbooks provide (which are themselves part of a market dominated by a few gigantic publishers who refuse to produce a product that would critique the very paradigm that they operate within).
