About the Author
Peter Leoni graduated in 2003 with a PhD in mathematical physics and then stumbled into the fascinating world of finance. He started his professional career in Belgium working for KBC Asset Management as a risk manager, modelling equity and interest rate derivatives. Later on he moved into ING as a front office quant on the exotic derivatives desk. In 2007 he switched his career path toward commodities with a particular focus on energy modelling. He spent four years in the trading unit of GDF Suez in Brussels and then worked for a private fund in Geneva, Macquarie Bank in London and currently for the London/Geneva office of a privately owned trading firm. He also holds the position of visiting professor for the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.

You can exercise your way into a reasonable amount of added muscle in your arms, but if the normal routine doesn't do all that you wanted, the next step is OVERALL BODYWEIGHT GAIN, not some secret technique. Not everyone can be Steve Reeves or Sergio Oliva, men with tiny waists and huge arms. To have such proportions, you must already have them before you begin working out. Most of us simply have to be bigger people if we want bigger arms. Why do I bring this up? : I ran into Manfred on the street when he did a show in Chicago many years ago. Pictures don't do him justice: He's science-fiction, supernaturally, monstrously huge. Trust me, he is not what most of you are looking for. You'll need to spend all of your free time eating. Don't come running to me if getting 18" arms also gets you a 38" waist!

This book has great pictures, and the pages of it are seen all over the web. However, the performance of the exercises needed to complete his "10 days to massive arms" claim lack clarity. Mr. Hoeberl should get the help of a more professional writer to complete this book. His methods do work, but you're not quite sure what the method is. Since then (really after a few weeks) my arms grew
like crazy!! And they still do ! I never used steroids
and I'm on my way to develop 50cm (cold)

There has been tremendous growth in the teaching of public relations around the world--enhancing practice in many countries outside North America. There has also been rapid growth in the number of professors who demand theoretical perspectives which might facilitate a unified comparative analysis across countries and regions. Only a few U.S. universities--six documented in this book--now teach courses formerly called "International Public Relations." However, many professors are going abroad to teach and do research. This suggests increased interest in and a need for courses dealing with international public relations. Furthermore, there is a dearth of literature dealing in depth with international PR, an important component of international communication.

This appears to be the first book-length comparative analysis of public relations as practiced in various countries and regions around the world. Although existing books on international PR focus largely on ways in which western practitioners, employers, and clients can operate effectively in other countries, this volume views public relations in each country or region covered from the perspective of practitioners in that country. It contains six chapters designed to provide a theoretical anchor for the 14 country and region analyses. Given the intense interest in public relations education as a factor in professional enhancement, it also discusses issues and practices relating to education.

most useful gospel piano book I've found

I was spurred to write this review in response to another review that indciated disappointment with this book. I have found it to be an outstanding presentation of typical gospel sound, much more direct and 'authentic' than other books I have tried.

I was disappointed with other books of being either too heavy on theory without really creating a gospel sound, or not presenting enough theory/practice that I could expand on my own. I think this book really achieves a nearly ideal balance on this account. And as someone who has worked through a lot of Hal Leonard Style Series, I think this is one of the very best books in that series in its presentation of a keyboard style.

Gospel keyboard as a whole has wandered into neo-soul and borrows from r'n'b and funk esp. in the open worship backup. This book doesn't cover the open worship pad work. The songs, examples and exercises are based on modern choir work that are cited throughout and as such the right hand work is based primarily on the vocal 3 part harmony. best piano instruction book i've encountered!

I've bought many piano instruction books over the years (mostly blues and jazz) and this is the best I've ever found. What I like best is that the musical tracks and lessons really sound like music (and gospel or worship music!), not lifeless drills. The author clearly writes from inside the genre -- he's not somebody with no feel for the music teaching a few simple elements to beginners. Most of the blues books, for example, will teach you elements of the style but never really sound like very good blues. Here, the musical tracks are really lovely. They efficiently illustrate a single musical idea but also are beautiful and expressive -- prayerful,joyful,rollicking, triumphant, meditative, sad, moving etc.

The book moves swiftly but comprehensively through a series of simple musical ideas -- many of which I haven't seen expressed anywhere else. The lessons are not belabored and they are well organized. Each isolated idea is relatively simple and bite-size but usually very fruitful. If this were the whole book it would still be worth the prize. But the real bonus is the quality of the written musical examples with their audio tracks which illustrate each idea. They provide a vocabulary of nice rhythmic motifs, bass parts, melodic themes, grooves and styles which are very musical. The way the tracks are performed provides additional great instruction in gospel phrasing, dynamics, feel & timing etc.

I'm an intermediate player and although the book is only 80 pages, there's a lot of material here. I've had the book about three weeks and I'm still exploring and working through the ideas in the first ten pages after the first chapter of recap explanatory material.

I hope the author keeps going writing additional books.

Best piano licks I've ever heard

I've just finished listening to the included CD, while following along with the written text. The recorded examples are the best I've ever heard on a Keyboard Styles CD. The author states in the intro that the book is intended for the advanced player with good sight reading skills. I play by ear. So it is great to have these exciting musical phrases transcribed. The examples have lots of chord changes per measure played against highly syncopated left hand bass lines, mostly three notes in the right hand with the bass note completing the full chord voicing. I agree with the one reviewer who said the examples were not Ray Charles sounding. The sound is more pop oriented. And there is a boat load of theory crammed into this book, like when to use diminished chords, chord couplings and such. I play mostly blues, so the changes presented in this book are brand new for me. I don't expect to be able to play the examples note for note, but the book presents a whole new palette of musical ideas that will enhance my personal style. I'm really excited about getting into it. I may even go to church!

From Uyless Black: Some ten years after writing technical books and receiving reviews on them, I've decided to respond to the input from readers. I should have done so sooner, but here it is now. You will now see this note placed on the comments for each book that is listed on this site, so don't bother re-reading. The note is the same for all the technical books.

The "pros" comments have dealt mainly with an easy to understand format. The "cons" comments have focused on the books (a) not being suited for college classes, (b) too many typos, and (c) mere recitations of ITU and Internet standards. There are other positive and negative comments, but these four points stand out.

The books were intended to be general references; general in relation to the topic itself. They were designed specifically to provide a relatively non-technical overview of ITU and Internet standards. They were used mostly by professionals who had degrees, and needed to (quickly) come to a general understanding of a set of standards. Afterwards, the readers could then go into the details of the standards themselves. Thus, my task was to distill many pages of highly detailed specifications into a few pages of summaries. One of the principal criticisms of the books was the very reason they were written.

I fault myself and my three publishers for not catching the typos, of which there are just too many. I was being asked by my publishers and my clients to hurry-up and get the next summary text out the door, as the clients' projects were beginning. That is why I wrote so many books in a short time. The technologies were coming out in rapid succession, and people did not have the time to read perhaps thousands of pages of standards. I did not take sufficient time to proof. But my publishers, sometimes with two to three proof readers---and at least one technical expert---reading a manuscript also dropped the ball.
I think my books provided a valuable service to my readers. My clients used them extensively, and I believe I was able to "short-cut" them to later read the details more efficiently. Nonetheless, in hindsight the books were insufficiently edited and written with too much haste.

I've been quite surprised that these books are still being sold. Not because they do not have merit, but that they are out-dated. The market for them does not come from the publishers, but from being on the used book market. My recommendation to you is not to buy technical books that are (sometimes) over ten years old.

One last point, which I hope you find humorous, perhaps ironic. Some readers compared some of my work unfavorably to an esteemed writer and lecturer. I read some his books. One contained a figure what was quite similar to a figure in one of my books; so similar in fact, that it included an error I had made in the figure. He did not source my figure, but led the reader to think it was his own creation----and his own error!

Just to note, I have only had the book ...

Just to note, I have only had the book for two days.
I wish I had this book earlier in my pastry career. Of all the books I have, the bread section on this book is probably the most extensive. The book goes over autolyse as well as when to add preferments when autolysing, a question I have had for a while. The most common breads have recipes that uses different preferments. Sadly, the book does not talk about using freshly ground flour in bread baking.

I wish there were more variations in some of the recipes in the book. For example, a few ways to flavor pastry cream and creme anglaise are mentioned, and measurements are given, but more creative flavorings are left out.

The book is the most extensive baking book I have seen, but it does not cover using fruit purees in pastry cream or using custard powder or flour for pastry cream.

The cakes in the book cover a few classics and a few idea, that to me, seem original.

The last baking book ill buy for a long time

This book is not for anybody who isn't truly trying find out why the nuts and bolts of baking are the nuts and bolts. It's intense, most of this book is pure information on the what and why of every component. It is a text book, so it's pretty robotic how the information is delivered, but just the section on mixing styles and why each is used is massive. This is definitely the last baking book I will buy for a long time. If your looking for quick and easy access recipes, this is not for you. The way the recipes are given is short hand. So if you don't read the section on mixing you will be forced to backtrack. So if your going to spend the money, make sure you put in the time this book requires before you jump into the recipes. Hope this review helps your choice!

Almost Perfect. But Is It Worth It For The "Home Baker"?

This book is written mostly for "the trade", but the home-chef (like me) can get a lot out of it. Apart from Bread and Pastry, it has extensive chapters on cakes, icings, cookies, chocolate(confection), ice-cream and quick breads (banana bread, scones, muffins) amongst other things. It is very comprehensive. The science can be understood by almost everyone, and the book is well illustrated (pictures of how to shape a baguette, etc). There are no "stories" from the author about how he first made this and that, and learnt this from there - and so forth. It reads like a school book. Very informative!

I was at first worried that this book had 1000's of recipes, but it says on the back that it has just under 300, which means there is a lot of theory in it (which I think is good). I has 2 Pannetone recipes and about 4 Croissant recipes. It has sachertorte, and black forest gateu, chocolate truffles and loads of other stuff. The carrot cake recipe is the best I've ever tried, and I've ended up using ALL the sections in the book (except for the ice-cream chapter), even though I only bought it for the Bread/Pastry initially.

For me there is one problem: I don't have a Mixer. That makes it hard to to follow the bread formulas (recipes) 100% accurately. There is enough science in the book, that you might find a "do-it-yourself" way if you experiment (at least I hope so).

In each bread formula in the book the author will specify what type of mix method to use: Short, Improved or Intensive (which basically is the 3 diffent speeds of the mixer kneading the dough).
- "Shortmix" is almost like kneading by hand, however quite few recipes call for a short mix.
- "Improvedmix" one can almost replicate by hand (but one might need to experiment with longer fermentation times and yeast amount to compensate and get a stronger dough).
- However I am more sceptical about for instance Pannetone and Brioche which call for an "Intesivemix", which is difficult by hand. Luckily there are quite few recipes that call for this mix method. Only bread with a lot of butter/sugar/eggs. But there is a "handmix" recipe for croissants.

When it comes to Ovens there is no discussion on how to compensate for lack of steam (the book is as I say, written for the apprentice/prof. in mind).

One last thing: I've had no problems with quantities in the recipes, because he always gives a so-called "test" amount (in OZ). But you can also divide the grams and kg. by 5 to get the right "home" batch if you use the metric system (I live in Norway, so i do).

Conclusion: I would recommend this book to the home-chef, but be prepared for a challenge :)

Worth five stars just for its insights

It's obvious that the authors of this book are extremely compassionate professionals. Although one may not subscribe to the theory of cognitive therapy being an effective solution for depressive or suicidal invididuals, the first few chapters alone are worth the price of the book: they are insightful, non-judgmental and empathetic. I am reading this book from the angle of someone with an extremely depressed family member, and I can't wait to give it to him, because I think he will find hope in its message. Highly recommended for those contemplating harming themselves; just as highly recommended for their friends and family members.

I thought this book was extremely helpful for the specific population, but would also easily be able to transfer the skills and interventions to other populations and disorders as well. It was an easy read that either a therapist or client would be able to understand.
