A worthy addition to your home bar

I find it extraordinarily amusing to read all the reviews that slag Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible 2016 based on the choice of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as his 2016 Whisky of the Year.
First off, as with all reviews it his opinion. Second off, you have a right to disagree - but please disagree only if you have actually tried the Northern Harvest Rye. Like most, I was quite surprised that Murray chose his whiskey. However, after trying it I found it to be very nice and quite drinkable. (This coming from a guy that normally detests Rye.)
Now I am obviously not nearly as educated as most of the people who offered their expert opinion. But I dare say that I have found more use of the previous versions of Jim Murray's guides then those experts. His reviews have helped me learn what to look for in a whiskey, how to interpret the tastes of different varieties and assisted me in making educated purchasing choices with my limited disposable income. If this is what you need then this guide is clearly worthy of a 5 star rating.

Book is Good - but not Great

After a thorough (and enjoyable) reading of this book, it seems to me that Murray tends to rate almost everything on a higher scale than most reviewers do. So, what many reviewers might give an 89, he'd give a 93. With that "skewed" rating system in mind, I was able to fairly enjoy his ratings and reviews. However, for those older folks whose eyesight may not be as great as it once was - be warned...the text in this book is VERY VERY SMALL! After about 15 minutes of reading, I had to put the book down and rest my eyes for a while.
His pick of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as the "World Whiskey of the Year, 2016" inspired me to seek out that whiskey and try it. Being that I have never tried a Canadian whiskey, and that I do not care for rye, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the Crown Royal pick. So much so that I have gone back and purchased a few extra bottles. I completely agree with his tasting notes on this one.
I guess the real question is, "Would I but this again next year when the 2017 edition comes out"? The answer is "no". Just way too much info on whiskeys I have no interest in. Since I drink American (USA) Bourbons and Whiskeys almost exclusively, I will stick with books that address those, and those only.
If you're just interested in American (USA) whiskeys, you would do much better to purchase Clay Risen's "American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye: A Guide to the Nation's Favorite Spirit, 2015 Edition" as American whiskeys are only a very small part of Murray's book.
