Again, these are the BEST books for teaching my Kindergarten unit on American Indians. They are simple and easy to read/understand, and illustrate basic facts about American Indians for my grade level.

Wouldn't trade them for ALL of the books available on the subject!

A "must - have" book

The first time I saw this book on the shelf of a prominent university library here in Jamaica, I just had to un-shelf it: it was eye - catching. I began reading and was impressed with the writer's style / approach in delivering information. It is so structured that it may be used at all levels.
I will be making recommendations to my supervisor for this book, along with the study guide, to be given consideration for our reference collection.

LOVED the class it was VERY INTERESTING

Had to get this book for a nutrition class, LOVED the class it was VERY INTERESTING! The book was a great addition to the class. However, I felt that there were parts in the book that dragged. It went into far more detail in parts. However I can see that if someone was going for a nutrition degree that more in depth would be what they were going for.

I have a problem with an author or "expert" on nutrition claiming that Registered Dietitians are the most complete and reliable source for science and fact based information. Is it a coincidence that Karen Drummond is an R.D. herself? Also, she lectures about getting "real" nutritional and scientific information from reliable and transparent websites that clearly identify their sponsors yet quotes from websites sponsored by, funded by and partnered with companies like Monsanto, Dupont, Kelloggs, etc.(except you wouldn't know that unless you do some digging). Is it a coincidence that this book is ridiculously expensive and co-authored by a former student from the Culinary Institute of America and happens to be the required textbook for the food science classes in the school? I'm so disappointed in the stale, regurgitated information in this book. I'd have an easier time just reading from the U.S.D.A food pyramid guidelines. There is nothing new or interesting in this book AT ALL. If you have any interest in nutrition, my guess is that you already know way more than what is discussed in this elementary school level waste of paper and money.

About the Author
STUART GREENE (Ph.D in Rhetoric, Carnegie Mellon University) is associate professor of English at the University of Notre Dame where he has served as the O'Malley Director of the University Writing Program and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in Arts and Letters. Among his co-edited volumes is Making Race Visible: Literacy Research for Racial Understanding, for which he won the National Council of Teachers of English Richard A. Meade Award in 2005, the forthcoming Connecting Home and School: Complexities, Concerns, and Considerations in Fostering Parent Involvement and Family Literacy. Editor of Literacy as a Civil Right, he co-directs a parent involvement project in the South Bend community. APRIL LIDINSKY (Ph.D. Literatures in English, Rutgers University) is an associate professor of Women's Studies at Indiana University South Bend. She has published and delivered numerous conference papers on writing pedagogy, women's autobiography, creative non-fiction, and film, and contributed to several textbooks on writing. Her work has appeared in the journals Tranformations and the International Feminist Journal of Politics, as well as book-length collections. She has served as acting director of the University Writing Program at Notre Dame and has won awards for her teaching and research through Indiana University.

Great guide for the academic writer

This is an excellent detailed guide for academic writing beginning at the beginning with the germ of an idea. It is very thorough in all aspects of the academic writing process. I wish I had owned this book as an undergraduate. This is an excellent tool for any academic writer at all levels from undergraduate to post-doctoral.

Misleading. Does NOT contain READER sections!

Misleading. I searched for the text I needed which is the "Text and Reader". When you click to rent the Kindle version you are taken to a "Text" only version. My main use for this book are the articles in the reader section (chapters 12 and on) which are not included in this version. It is a misleading download. Do not buy or rent the Kindle version if you need the "Reader" section.

About the Author

George Beekman is an Honorary Instructor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. For more than two decades he designed and taught courses in computer literacy, interactive multimedia, computer ethics, and computer programming at OSU. His innovative computer literacy course served as the inspiration for Computer Currents, the first edition of the book that evolved into Digital Planet. George Beekman has taught workshops in computer literacy and multimedia for students, educators, and economically disadvantaged families from the Atlantic to Alaska. He has written many books on computers, information technology, and multimedia, as well as more than 100 articles and reviews for Macworld and other popular publications. George also bikes, hikes, and runs on Oregon trails and roads, produces and plays acoustic and electronic music, shoots and edits photos and videos, and cultivates community connections on and off line.

Ben Beekman is a multimedia designer, writer, and technical consultant based in Portland, Oregon. Ben has developed multimedia Web sites for businesses, nonprofits, artists, and musicians. He has done extensive desktop publishing, page layout, and design for periodicals and one-shot publications. He has written blogs for the Web and technology reviews for print media. He has worked behind-the-scenes on several books, and co-authored the last two editions of this one. Ben also composes, mixes, and remixes music and video, tracks the evolving Internet, consumes comedy, plays disc golf, and enjoys the outdoors with friends and his dog Gizmo.

!!!!Be aware of what you are purchasing!!!!! I just realized the version that says "introductory" in the title is NOT the full text! Who the hell puts a book online under the same name with a one word difference??? This should be clearly spelled out for people that are not aware that you can purchase a full version as well as a short version which apparently has "introductory" in the title. I thought introductory meant introductory to the material. Introductory has 449 pages 10 chapters, and full version has over 656 pages and 15 chapters. Amazon should list all this information. I will be asking for my money back!!

About the Author
Gabrielle Roy was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, in 1909. Her parents were part of the large Quebec emigration to western Canada in the late nineteenth century. The youngest of eight children, she studied in a convent school for twelve years, then taught school herself, first in isolated Manitoba villages and later in St. Boniface.

In 1937 Roy travelled to Europe to study drama, and during two years spent in London and Paris she began her writing career. The approaching war forced her to return to Canada, and she settled in Montreal.

Roy’s first novel, The Tin Flute, ushered in a new era of realism in Quebec fiction with its compassionate depiction of a working-class family in Montreal’s Saint-Henri district. Her later fiction often turned for its inspiration to the Manitoba of her childhood and her teaching career.

In 1947 Roy married Dr. Marcel Carbotte, and after a few years in France, they settled in Quebec City, which was to remain their home. Roy complemented her fiction with essays, reflective recollections, and three children’s books. Her many honours include three Governor General’s Awards, France’s Prix Fémina, and Quebec’s Prix David.

Gabrielle Roy died in Quebec City, Quebec, in 1983.

The Tin Flute

Shortly after it was published, The Tin Flute surprised Canadian readers and was soon widely read and enjoyed internationally. Its author, Gabrielle Roy, reached out to an audience with eloquent, flowing prose, by describing the very depth of the human condition through the Lacasse family.
Briefly: the main character of the novel is the oldest Lacasse child, Florentine. Her poor family, residing in the slums of Saint Henri, Montreal, rely heavily on the wages she brings in as a waitress. Rose-Anna, her mother, struggles to care for her growing family and struggle through tragedy, while the father, Azarius, is unable to maintain a job. Florentine's life is turned upside down when she meets a handsome man named Jean, an affair that is doomed from the beginning. A crushed Florentine turns to Jean's friend, Emmanuel, for his love, although she cannot return it, as she is still torn over her feelings for Jean. In the original French, it was entitled, "Bonheure d'occasion" which cannot be perfectly translated. However, the English title of "The Tin Flute" is very suitable and expresses the message of the novel from the smallest Lacasse child, Daniel -- his only great desire was to have a shiny tin flute, a symbol of all that he would never be able to call his own, in a poverty-stricken existence.
With this groundwork, Roy paints a convincing and enthralling portrait of an impoverished family, troubled love, and mixed ideals in the midst of World War II. It is a novel well worth reading and will leave you with new insight into the human condition and the brutality of poverty. Although some phrases are lost in the translation to English from the original French, the translation is highly successful in being as nearly as effective as the original.

If only more books were written like this! The Tin Flute is the poignant story of a young girl growing up in poverty in the slums of Montreal. It is the 1940's, war is brooding. And we are introduced to a French Canadian family faced with unemployment, too many children, and despair. We suffer as the mother, pregnant again, searches on foot for affordable housing. Her daughter works at the five-and-dime and is inlove with a man who holds contempt for her class and social background.
I have read this story three times. It is without a doubt, one the greatest books ever written of its genre. If you enjoyed "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" or "Angela's Ashes" you will no doubt love this story equally well. It is unforgettable.

It's really too bad that Canadian authors aren't publicized more in the U.S. I bought this book from amazon-canada because I wouldnt have known what to look for. It's won several literary prizes in Canada and is well deserving of them. The story of a French-Canadian family during the depression and early years of WWII in Montreal, it portrays a world that no longer exists. In this country, the people would have been Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation. The differences between then and now were phenomenal. Men joined the Army to put food on the table. They looked everywhere for honest work, even part time or temporary or low-paying. They didn't join gangs or deal drugs. People weren't afraid of each other, even in the worst neighborhoods. Yet their lives were unbelievably hard. There was high infant mortality. A child with leukemia was doomed. Landlords put whole families out in the street when they got behind with the rent, often due to unemployment. The war ended the depression, but some of the characters ask themselves if it's worth the price, or if peace as they knew it was any better. The author wrote this book at the time it took place, in a city she knew. It could have easily been set in Detroit or Chicago, London or Dublin. There is a universal quality to this story, that gives a vivid picture of the times. The book isn't cheerful, but it's also not hopeless. At the end you don't know what will happen to these people, but they have a chance. A really moving story.

After finishing Philippine folk tales, I have a new respect for the culture. I learned a lot about what the people of the Philippines value and worship. The folk tales have illustrations that give a deeper look into how colorful the history of the Philippines is.
