Beyond Biocentrism: Rethinking Time, Space, Consciousness, and the Illusion of Death, by Robert Lanza

Biocentrism shocked the world with a radical rethinking of the nature of reality.

But that was just the beginning.

In Beyond Biocentrism, acclaimed biologist Robert Lanza, one of TIME Magazine’s "100 Most Influential People in 2014," and leading astronomer Bob Berman, take the reader on an intellectual thrill-ride as they re-examine everything we thought we knew about life, death, the universe, and the nature of reality itself.

The first step is acknowledging that our existing model of reality is looking increasingly creaky in the face of recent scientific discoveries. Science tells us with some precision that the universe is 26.8 percent dark matter, 68.3 percent dark energy, and only 4.9 percent ordinary matter, but must confess that it doesn’t really know what dark matter is and knows even less about dark energy. Science is increasingly pointing toward an infinite universe but has no ability to explain what that really means. Concepts such as time, space, and even causality are increasingly being demonstrated as meaningless.

All of science is based on information passing through our consciousness but science hasn’t the foggiest idea what consciousness is, and it can’t explain the linkage between subatomic states and observation by conscious observers. Science describes life as an random occurrence in a dead universe but has no real understanding of how life began or why the universe appears to be exquisitely designed for the emergence of life.

The biocentrism theory isn’t a rejection of science. Quite the opposite. Biocentrism challenges us to fully accept the implications of the latest scientific findings in fields ranging from plant biology and cosmology to quantum entanglement and consciousness.

By listening to what the science is telling us, it becomes increasingly clear that life and consciousness are fundamental to any true understanding of the universe. This forces a fundamental rethinking of everything we thought we knew about life, death, and our place in the universe.

Review
"Lanza and Berman employ cutting edge science to rediscover ancient truths about life and death and reconceptualize our very notions of reality and consciousness. Beyond Biocentrism is an enlightening and fascinating journey that will forever alter your understanding of your own existence."
—Deepak Chopra

"Beyond Biocentrism is a joyride through the history of science and cutting-edge physics, all with a very serious purpose: to find the long-overlooked connection between the conscious self and the universe around us."
—Corey S. Powell, former editor-in-chief, Discover magazine

"This intriguing and provocative book will challenge some of what you know and push you into rethinking your view of science—all the while entertaining you with a fast-paced, exhilarating narrative journey."
—David J. Eicher, editor in chief, Astronomy Magazine

"[Beyond Biocentrism] offers a neurobiological point of view to help answer questions about the world around us. Lanza and Berman make the journey towards a better understanding of the role of consciousness and perception. . . . A fun read.”
—Kwang-Soo Kim, professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Harvard Medical School, and director, Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory, McLean Hospital

"Lanza and Berman's latest statement of their theory of ‘biocentrism’ changes the way we think about age-old religious questions such as the origin of the universe and human immortality. Based on cutting edge work in physics and biology and explained with exceptional clarity, Beyond Biocentrism is a must-read for anyone interested in science and religion."
—Ronald M. Green, professor emeritus for the study of ethics and human values, and former chairman of the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College

"Will machines ever achieve consciousness? Are plants aware? Is death an illusion? These are some of the big questions tackled in Beyond Biocentrism, which serves up a new, biology-based theory of everything that is as delightful to read as it is fascinating. Tremendously clear and lovely writing—a huge achievement."
—Pamela Weintraub, psychology & health editor for Aeon Magazine, former Executive Editor of Discover Magazine and former editor in chief of OMNI Magazine

Praise for Biocentrism:

"An extraordinary mind. . . . Having interviewed some of the most brilliant minds in the scientific world, I found Dr. Robert Lanza’s insights into the nature of consciousness original and exciting. His theory of biocentrism is consistent with the most ancient traditions of the world which say that consciousness conceives, governs, and becomes a physical world. It is the ground of our Being in which both subjective and objective reality come into existence."
—Deepak Chopra

"This is a brave new book. Instead of placing life as an accidental byproduct, the authors place life at the apex of universal existence and purpose. It is a very thrilling and disturbing read. While the proposals made in Biocentrism seem radical and counter-intuitive at first, a bit of reflection will soon make the images clearer and place us on the pathway to a better and more commonsensical mindset."
—Michael Gooch, author of Wingtips with Spurs

"Both interesting and worth the effort of reading it . . . From the way [Lanza] chooses to present his arguments, it’s clear he has a solid grasp of esoteric disciplines . . . His style is conversational . . . And his sense of wonder . . . is as infectious as it is delightful.”
—Midwest Book Review

Whose mind?
By Dienne
Sometimes it feels like my whole life has been a quest for truth. My mother is a devout Methodist while my father is agnostic (not that he really admits as much to my mother). While there are aspects of Christianity that I admire, I grew up knowing that I didn’t buy the whole package. In my teens and young adult years I looked to Eastern religion (Buddhism and Taoism most notably) and science for answers, but, while I’ve often felt like I’m on the verge of a great understanding, I’ve never really found what I’ve been looking for. In my older adult years I have largely abandoned the process. Partially because I’m too busy taking care of kids and putting food on the table, but partially because I’ve started to get the feeling that the quest is pointless.

So I was intrigued when I saw this book. Basically, we’re told, everything we “know” is wrong. I don’t find that much of a leap. At various points I found this book intriguing, exciting, challenging, fulfilling, baffling, irritating and exasperating. Any book that can do all that is probably well worth reading, even if you’re not fully on board with all of the conclusions.

The first half of the book is devoted to deconstructing what we think we know about the world. We delve into quantum theory, relativity and other theories to show that time and space don’t exist, at least not as we commonly perceive them. Contrary to what we “know” with science (not to mention what we feel in our guts), “spooky action at a distance” is not only possible, it’s quite common. Science is so focused on “objectivity” that it leaves a gaping hole in our knowledge – a hole that can only be filled by losing “objectivity”. That is, to really understand and make sense of what science has been telling us, we have to look to the observer – our own subjective sense. The authors take us through experiments like the double slit experiment, as well as looking at entangled twin particles that seem to know and replicate what the other is doing even if the other is galaxies away.

Next we delve into deconstructing the “dumb random universe” theory. Simply by looking at the chances that 10 books arranged randomly on a shelf would happen to end up in alphabetical order (a probability of about 1 in 3.5 million) we can see that it stretches credibility to believe that everything in our universe has ended up the way it is simply by random chance. The chances that a galaxy like ours would randomly have a solar system with a planet that is perfectly suited for life would simply happen because of particles randomly bumping into each other is so astronomical as to be impossible. The authors demolish the idea of string theory (the idea of multiple universes) as being a “theory of everything” and, hence, a theory of nothing. And in any case, even if this dumb random universe theory were correct, no one has yet given a satisfactory explanation as to how consciousness as arisen out of all of this randomness.

The later part of the book develops the authors’ answer to these dilemmas. We have been, in fact, starting backward, trying to arrive at consciousness by studying physics and biology. We should, rather start with consciousness and then the universe makes sense. There is, according to the authors, no “out there” out there. Everything happens in our minds, so it is our minds that we need to start with. In other words, thousands of years of exploration, observation and science have led us back to where the ancient Hindus started thousands of years ago.

I’ll have to admit first off that I am no scientific expert, so I did not follow all of the science in this book. A large part of science is being able to get your head around it – to be able to visualize, even roughly, what the theories and equations are pointing to. I admit I was often rather lost in this way. The authors develop their argument step-by-step, brick-by-brick in a seemingly incontrovertible way. But perhaps because I can’t get my head around it all, I remain skeptical. For one thing, I have to question their sources. Dr. Lanza is a medical doctor, and I have a hard time believing he also has a deep and thorough knowledge of theoretical physics – those are rather big fields for any one person to master. Berman seems to be more of a science generalist who came to the field because of his own “enlightenment” experience. Many of the references seem to come from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN and other layman’s magazines. Not to disparage those publications but, being as they are written for the lay audience, they are of necessity rather simplified. My field is psychology and I have read both academic journals and popular publications like PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. I can tell you that the latter is wildly simplified, often to the point of error.

But in any case, my real issue is that biocentrism doesn’t really solve or explain anything more than any other scientific or religious approach. It just raises more question – many of which are the same as any religion. If everything boils down to consciousness, whence did consciousness come from? Again, we’re back to an unexplainable first cause. Furthermore, whose consciousness? The authors frequently use the words “our mind”. Is this meant to imply a collective consciousness? I suppose so if we’re all part of some overarching consciousness and divisions and dualities are all illusions. (If not, we’re back to Descartes “I think, therefore I am” because I can only verify my own consciousness – perhaps I’m dreaming and making up everything else.)

If there really are no dualities and all is illusion, how did these illusions come to be? Did we each split ourselves off from this overarching consciousness? Or did this consciousness split us off? And in either case, why? What are we “here” for? And what happens after “death” (which doesn’t really exist)? Do we rejoin the larger consciousness? Will we retain any individual sense of ourselves as separate, or will we just merge into the larger whole (which, for all practical purposes is annihilation)? Biocentrism doesn’t answer these fundamental questions any better than “God did it” or “turtles all the way down”.

Moreover, if everything is consciousness and everything else is illusion, that renders life itself meaningless. If there is no death, then it doesn’t matter that people are dying of hunger or war or lack of medical care – they are just rejoining this larger consciousness sooner. In fact, we should all just lay down and die. What difference does suffering and evil and oppression make anyway? While I don’t buy into any of the Western religions, I do admire them for struggling with the meaning of life and death, good and evil, struggle and altruism.

Nonetheless, I am very glad I read this book and I have passed it on to other people and look forward to discussion on the issues raised. I was, as noted, very challenged by this book and it has opened up new possibilities. The book is well written and intriguing, and, despite my skepticism, not easily brushed off or dismissed. Incidentally, I have not read the first book. I would like to go back and see if that book answers any of the questions raised here. Whether you agree, disagree, or simply remain skeptical, I recommend reading this book for some very satisfying food for thought.

Book that will change one's understanding of their own existance
By Eugenia
The first thing I must say about this book it that there are not enough stars to describe what a good read this book truly is. Robert Lanza, MD teamed up with Bob Berman (astrophysicist) to write this wonderful 200 page book that for me -- finally put it all together. I studied physics and can say for myself that I have a mind of scientist that is (over)loaded with logic. But I am also a yoga teacher and since my father's death nearly 10 years ago, I have been actively looking for answers about death, immortality and nature of space and time. I read so many books about the topic, I lost count. That was until I came across this book. Authors finally put it all together for me that both my scientific, logical mind and my spiritual mind could put it all together in a manner that it finally all made sense.

One of the 'a-ha" moments was towards the end of the book when author Lanza acknowledges the fact that plants have consciousness. I was reading that part of the book on the train on my way form work and at one moment, I said out loud (without realizing it) - "Oh my God!" An older gentlemen, a professional man, sitting in a fine, tailored suit next to my seat, was startled and he replied: "Did you miss your train exit? Was I in a way?". I just looked at him and smiled and my response was simply:" Oh, no. It is just that I learned from this book that plants have consciousness! Can you believe it? And there is a proof!".. He was so kind, he looked at me and said after a longer pause replied: "Well, it does kind of make sense - the fact that plants have consciousness...." What can I say - I repeated the same story to my yoga students I was teaching that same night.

The fact is that this book is so rich with references to ancient philosophical books, logic from ancient Greece and how all of that information is relevant today. Authors provide scientific insight on classical physics (Newton) to modern physics (quantum mechanics and relativity). For me personally, this book, every single page of it was food for my soul. Not to mention that I was delighted to learn (and accept) the premise that authors have that, after all, we are all immortal. Some of the very fortunate people on earth experience enlightenment, and this book will show every reader that there is a potential in each and every one of us to experience it. This book opened my eyes to possibilities that no one has ever presented in such a concise and beautiful way before.

There is one portion of the book where authors discuss how human beings are used to observing and exploring universe by "looking" at the skies. This book missed it by a couple of months, since it's been announced a few months back that scientists in New Mexico, for the first time, "heard" creation of the black hole. This was just an idea that Einstein had nearly 50 years ago that the events in the universe can be heard and not just seen and it was only recently that scientists could prove that events in the universe can indeed be heard by human beings. Nevertheless, this book is priceless and I am keeping it as a reference in my library. It has underlining all over the place and I just cannot stop talking about it to everyone I know.

Another wonderful thing that must be mentioned is that one author (Lanza) relies strictly on science and logic, while the other co-author (Berman) believes in a "gut" feeling in spite of the fact that he received a training as a scientist. Perhaps the part of the reason is the fact that for the period of three weeks, Mr. Berman experienced enlightenment himself. I must quote one part of the book, where Mr. Berman says: "We trust our instincts. We need no textbook to teach us to love, or to recognize danger, or to be swept into a joy by a beautiful garden. Yet when it comes to grasping the nature of existence, we fumble and stumble through insensate theories, our eyes glazed over as we hear about string theory's extra dimensions".

My personal struggle my entire life has been to reconcile my scientific mind with my deep sense of intuition. For a long time I denied myself my intuition because my rational mind always felt that there has to be a rational "proof" first before I make up my mind and fully accept my gut feeling. This book has finally thought me a lesson that I will allow my intuition to lead me first, I will trust it unconditionally and rationality will follow in its own time and show itself when it is ready. For that lesson I am so thankful to both of these authors. They are my personal heroes.

A bit of a stretch but a good read.
By Magnus Rasmusson
I have been haunted by the implications of the double slit experiment ever since I first really learned about it from the book Quantum Enigma. Since then I have read countless books on the subject both scientific and philosophical to try and wrap my head around the implications, which by the way, are huge! That we are somehow dialed in to the very fabric of the universe is clear but answering how and why is the challenge.
I tend to mostly agree with Robert Lanzas conclusions but he goes a little too far too quickly in my opinion. The issue I had the most trouble with is that there is no " out there" Everything we perceive and think of as "out there" is actually only occurring inside our skull. Out there is only light and electromagnetic fields. He uses the example of a coffee table by the window, as I recall. It does not exist. I can almost buy in to that, except the person standing next to me is "seeing" exactly the same thing. How does that work? Lanza offers no explanation. Maybe we are all connected somehow. Who knows?
Overall the book is a good attempt to answer some of these perplexing questions and a good read if not for his excellent writing style.

Great entry-level business stats book
By TW990
People should stop posting reviews with those reviews based on the condition of the book received, the shipping speed, etc. You should rate the seller based on this information. The reviews here should be product-focused and based on the content of the product, value for the money, etc.

Anyways, I am completely surprised at the negative reviews for prior editions. I needed an entry-level business stats book to refresh my understanding of applied statistics before taking a more advanced graduate-level course. This book was excellent for my purpose. It lends itself well to self-study. It does present the math and formulas but doesn't overwhelm you with them. Instead it focuses on application and interpretation, which is what every book should focus on given the multitude of software programs available. There are many, many examples to reinforce the material presented. The solutions manual is also great. Very colorful and modern. The text is also succinct.

I subtracted a star because (and I hope the authors are reading these reviews)...there needs to be integration of other software packages besides Excel and Minitab. I think the authors made a good decision in moving away from in-text integration of Minitab and focusing more on Excel, but the reality is that they need to support other packages like JMP, SPSS, etc.

Otherwise, the authors did a great job, and helped me to prepare for my graduate course after a significant absence from statistical work.

Majors on the minors - online course is a useless typing test
By Shogirl
This book has long and laborious examples which take up most of the text. It is heavy on these overly-detailed stories and short on information. But the thing to avoid at all costs is the online Pearson Course Compass MyStatLab or whatever it's called. Unless that is, you love typing in long, longer and extra long tedious lists of numbers. It is much more of a mind-numbing typing test than anything to do with statistics or business. Once you accurately retype number after number after tedious number, you've totally forgotten any point of learning that might have been related. Next, you get to spend hours and hours and hours making sure you round and truncate exactly and precisely just as the course wants you to with six digit accuracy, or guess what? You get to do it again, and again and again until you guess exactly right! Unbelievable! Oh and one more thing, the questions in the test bank for this class are only vaguely related to the text and certainly completely unrelated to the online suffering. Don't bother with the book or the online course as prep for the exams. Get yourself a real book with tough examples and clear explanations of theory and practice (unlike this book), because the tests are not easy. This online course should be administered to convicted criminals as punishment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you value your sanity.

RUN THE OTHER WAY
By Spence
If you can get another statistics book please do! If you are a professor please consider this review.

Negatives
- Business Application: This book teaches you to use two different programs (Minitab & Excel) in order to do statistics. This is the biggest joke of the book! You are better off doing the the problems by hand because the ways in which they try to teach you to use excel are completely useless. My professor would give us weekly quizes and he would ask us to solve problems using Excel, but the book was such a poor tool that I would have to go and "Google" how to solve the problems with Excel and learn all over again. I spent hours and hours of extra time because I was learning how this book taught (an antiquated hand written approach) and then re-learning Excel approaches. No business does any sort of statistics this way.
- Student Solutions Manuel: I had hopes in the beginning that this would be a tool in helping me learn how the book was arriving at the answers to the questions and problems. Not only did it not help in any way to learn how to do the problem in Excel, but the written out approaches were shabby and half hearted. It seemed as though they had some teacher's aids working on this, but they had no care or desire, so they did what they needed to in order to get by, but nothing more. Such a let down.

Positives
-The only positive I can think of for this review is that I have to retake stats for my degree and I am using a different book this semester. It is called Modern Business Statistics by Anderson, Sweeney, and Williams. The focus of this book is to teach how to do statistics with Excel. This is a far superior book, especially when it comes to actual business applications.

Other classmates had older versions of this book and they were worse than the eighth edition. I hope this review is helpful to any students and to any professors.

PS If you are stuck with using this book, but do have a professor who is expecting you to do work in Excel extensively I would suggest this youtube channel for help. The guy is a professor and does a great job explaining almost everything this book left out. Best of luck! [....] I don't know if links are allowed, if they are not the channel is named excelisfun and this is the site to download his tutorials [....]

A textbook full of inaccuracies
By Ralph Peteranderl
I am using this book as a textbook for the biotechnology freshman class at a vocational highschool. To make it short, the book is horrible. The images are from a stock photography agency, with little relevance to the text and are often pointless. The picture of one scientist working on a 96-well plate dispenser shows up as somebody working to wipe out the cotton weevil and as a scientist sequencing the bovine genome. Punnett squares are done wrong, and images of cells in interphase stained to visualize the Barr bodies are supposed to show the Y-chromosome. There is at least one factual mistake on almost every page, and the writing does not raise any questions that may arise with the use of genetic engineering in agriculture.

Very little thought and discussion seem to have gone into the writing of this book, and I would not spend the money on it again

From Library Journal
The Costumer's Handbook (1980), the bible of theatrical costumers, has been out of print for a while. It is resurrected here in a much expanded version as two essential reference/hand/text books, one for designers and one for technicians. Both are superbly illustrated and contain both an extensive annotated bibliography and a lengthy shopping guide. The Designer's Handbook follows the process from script to production, also offering contains a chapter on the profession. The Technician's Handbook begins with setting up a costume shop and goes on to such topics as safety, fabrics, pattern-making, con struction, fitting, dyeing, and sections on hair, hats, and accessories. Both titles are required purchases for theater collections.

Excellent!
By Laura Darkly
It is amazing that someone could leave a negative review of a book because it was "not what [they] were looking for", when the description of the book states exactly what it's about. It is not a pattern book. It is not a book full of historical costume pictures. It is a book for theatrical costume designers, going over the process of theatrical costume design from start to finish, and it is very good & thorough. Extremely helpful, especially if you're just starting out in costuming for productions of any size!

I didn't know where to start until someone lent me this book
By A Customer
I'd been assisting designers for quite some time, even designed some of my own shows, without an education in costume design. I have lots of great experience but I'm sure nothing can compete with a costume design education (mine is in fashion design), which I'd like to pursue when I have the time. I'm so glad I found out about this book! Every aspect of the process you need to know about is in here. It is essential! I can't believe I survived as long as I did without it.

Excellent overview of process
By Bridgette Dyer-Leighton
This is a great resource for the design process. I especially use these guidelines for analysis of a play and characters whenever I design a show. A must have for anyone interested in designing shows!!

Comprehensive, but long
By Just a girl
Pros: Very comprehensive in subject matter, good grouping of information, gives definition of key words at side of each page, contains summaries at the end of each chapter

Cons: Not visually appealing (only black and blue ink used, even in pictures), The sections are long and drawn out, no chapter review questions are given to test proficiency.

Overall, I thought I must have recieved an old textbook due to the lack of visual stimulation which helps me absorb the information. But I do have the most recent copy. I wonder why they would cut corners in this regard even though the book sells for as much as other books that make reading easier by providing a more pleasant visual experience.

But it is a college level book, so I can't complain too much. The quality of information is good.

And, as always, he lets the chips fall where they may.In intimate detail, Lee recounts Singapore's unforgettable history. You'll be with Lee as he leads striking unionists against the colonial government; shares tea and rounds of golf with key players in Britain and Malaya; and drinks warm Anchor beer with leaders of the communist underground at secret midnight meetings. Lee Kuan Yew: Singapore, His Vision
By John C. Taylor
Mr. Lee's book is an outstanding exposition of his vision for Singapore and how he and dedicated comrades made it a reality. For me, it was a special experience in which I was able to check the accuracy of my own research of 25 years ago.
In 1976, my Master's thesis in Asian Studies was entitled Lee Kuan Yew, A Political Biography. It covered the period from Lee's birth until 1963, when Singapore became an independent nation.
In my readings of events in Malaysia and Singapore after WW2, it became apparent that two men, Lee Kuan Yew and Tunku Abdul Rahman, represented strikingly different points of view on how the region should develop. Lee was the assertive representative of the Chinese majority in Singapore (and would-be spokesman of all Straits Chinese). Rahman was a traditional Malay prince and Malaysian prime minister who held very conservative views based on the primacy of the bumiputra, the ethnic Malay minority in its own land. He could not afford to allow Lee to build up Chinese political power on the Malay mainland.
My thesis was simply that Lee Kuan yew came to hold a specific vision of what Singapore should be. When it became clear that his vision could not be realized as a part of Malaysia, there came the split which created the tiny island nation. I based my extensive readings and research mostly upon secondary sources, including writings by Alex Josey and others who worked closely with Lee. I also read Lee's collected speeches and other primary material, as much as was available.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Mr. lee's first volume showed that I had been credibly accurate in my conclusions about what and how he did to create Singapore. Those conclusions included knowledge of the warts on his political complexion, and the reasons for them. Over the ensuing years, I have read much about how Lee and the People's Action Party ran a repressive police state. Yet, other readings and a short stay in Singapore in 1998 showed me strongly that Singaporeans live in a modern, prosperous and quite open society. The PAP's conservative policies have made it a success story and have also created structures intended to carry the nation forward into a future of more of the same. Mr. Lee's first volume details the struggles and victories which laid the foundation for this success.
I most strongly recommend this book for all who want to understand how one man, leading a group of similarly dedicated colleagues, created a nation which expressed his vision of what it could be, a successful modern society in a part of the world where close neighbors are much less so.

Inspiring account of the battle for Singapore
By A Customer
This book is a gripping read and puts you strongly on LKY's side in the battle for freeing Singapore from the grips of the colonial British, the communists and finally the Malaysians. Very eye-opening for those Westerners who can't understand how this society came to be both so modern and remain so authoritarian. Full of personal honesty and insight.
LKY is one of the most amazing statespersons this century and is certainly one with incredible political skill - Singapore couldn't be half the country it is today without him. To have coexisted with communists in his party for 10 years and to still have kept his integrity took an inordinate amount of personal character - a strength which has served Singapore enormously well.
However, one complaint I have is that Mr. Lee does not provide a lot of personal insight into what drove him in the battle for Singapore - nowhere in the book does he talk about how or why his love for a free Singapore became so strong, and there is not a lot of insight into the source of his own strengths (of which there are many) and weaknesses (of which he has a few). He seems to have picked up views early on which have never lessened, even as times have changed - for example, he admits that he learned the importance of strong penalties for crimes from his experiences during the Japanese occupation in World War II, yet 50 years on Singapore is the country in the world with the highest number of executions per capita, even more than China - is it really still as important for the country to be as authoritarian now as the Japanese were in wartime?
Also, although Mr. Lee owns up to his mistakes along the way quite openly, he doesn't provide his personal motives behind his long struggle, his feelings for his actions and friends, even when he was clearly overcame as in his breakdown during his independence press conference in August 1965, and the reasons why he was so much more perceptive and successful than other leaders. I hope to see more introspection in the second volume. A wonderful read, nonetheless.

Surprisingly exciting tale - and the fetish of caning
By Cambodia Fan
Alright, the title was just to get your attention. Although LKY did recall his own childhood caning at the hands of his school master with a little too much relish. That said, the Singapore story is indeed a fascinating one - and in this book LKY did an excellent job of telling his account of that story. With everyone from Margaret Thatcher and George Bush to - somewhat unexpectedly - John Chambers (Cisco CEO) and Scott McNealy (SunMicro CEO) genuflecting in Lee's direction from the dust jackets, there's no need for me to rehash his greatness. Instead, I will try to stay on the critical side of things.
This book is the first in a 2 volume set covering the years from LKY's childhood to 1965, when Singapore was expelled from the Malaysian federation. The book is structured chronologically, thereby giving a very coherent narrative of the years in question. In contrast the 2nd volume of the set is organized into "thematic discussions" from which the reader must piece together the exact sequence of events. The second volume reads a bit like a political testament and will not surprise anyone already knowledgeable about modern Singapore and LKY's many pronouncements. Personally I find this volume to be more interesting because of the many insights that it provided into LKY's mind.
LKY's prose is much like the man himself - factual, direct, sometimes witty, always to the point. Eloquent rhetoric is not his forte, and his lawyerly obsession with details can be tedious at times. One also wishes that Mr Lee had been more reflective on his personal motivations and beliefs, or at least provided more analytical insights into the events and people that he described. Nonetheless, it's a good and often gripping read, and one must simply accept that LKY is not a man to commit acts of introspection in public too often.
What emerges from these pages is how much LKY's political philosophy, and therefore the Shape of modern Singapore, has been mould by his experience as a young man. Lee himself admitted that the 3 years he spent under Japanese occupation were the most influential of his life. From those years he learned about the exercise of raw power, the link between adaptability and survival, not to mention the deterring effects of harsh punishments on crime. (He noted - a little admiringly perhaps - that one could always leave the door open at night under Japanese occupation. The penalty for burglary seems to have been having your head displayed on a stake in a public square.) As one of the best students in Singapore he easily gained admission to Cambridge after the war and spent several happy years as a law student in England. The occasional racism he encountered did not affect him much. On the other had he was so impressed by the Labor welfare state that he remained a Fabian socialist till the 70's. He never did like the Communists though. As the scion of a prominent (though bankrupted by the Depression) family he instinctively disliked the rabble-rousing tactics of the Communists, though his aversion did not prevent him from forming a united front with the Communist MCP in the fight against British colonialism. It should be noted that once self-rule has been achieved, he was not above using the British to clamp down on his MCP allies.
To his credit, the savagery that he witnessed as a young man did not seem to have rubbed off on him. Though often harsh and always Machiavellian, Lee was never bloody, and seldom brutal. In many regards he was a true visionary. Born Chinese, raised among Malays, and educated by the British, he envisioned a multi-racial, multi-cultural nation long before it was politically correct. The rejection of that vision by Malaysia is probably the greatest disappointment of his life. In economic matters, he was that rare breed with the heart of a socialist and the mind of a free-market capitalist - again, long before such notions became the IMF orthodoxy. In political matters, however, he never did seem to move beyond the siege mentality of the early days of independence and never could leave behind the shadows of the Japanese occupiers and Communist subversives. He never grasped the importance of building institutions larger than himself and learned to appreciate the value of an open, competitive political culture. In his book LKY took great pleasure in ridiculing those conservative "King's Chinese" who were born under British rule and could not imagine anything otherwise. It's ironic that in the not too distant future, books may appear ridiculing him as someone born fighting subversives and cannot imagine a world at peace.
There's a fine line separating the great administrator and the truly visionary leader. For more than 40 years LKY has straddled that line. Unfortunately for himself and Singapore, he never did manage to bring his other foot across.
