A great story about a Norwegian-American family

MAMA'S BANK ACCOUNT is a great book about a Norwegian family living in San Francisco. When they have a bill that they need to pay, Mama always says, "We don't want to go to the Big Bank." And everyone will think of something that they can do to help the the bill get payed. Mama loves the city and wants all of her children to be born in San Francisco. When the family moves to the country to live on a farm with goats, no one is happy. Mama becomes pregnant and tells everyone that they have to move back to the city. I thought that MAMA'S BANK ACCOUNT was a nice book about the Great Depression. The stories are sweet and very believeable.

Deserves its classic status

Mama fell in love with San Francisco as soon as she and her husband arrived in the city from Norway. Five children were born to her there, and she raised them with love and wisdom that daughter Katrin - who Americanized her name to "Kathryn" in early adolescence - would always remember.

I won't call this classic collection of real-life stories charming, because it's got too much solid and at times downright unpleasant reality in its pages. Instead I'll call it inspiring. Money, education, and influence Mama's family didn't have; but everything that really matters they had in plenty. Good food, meticulously clean shelter, solid values, and most of all - of course - love. Recommended for all ages in the highest possible terms!

Knowledgeably written by experienced flyfisher Eric Newman, Flyfisher's Guide To New York presents an exhaustive 526-page compendium detailing of great flyfishing locales all over the great state of New York. The thoroughly "user friendly" and deftly organized text is profusely enhanced with maps, directions, facility information, descriptions, recommendations and more. A superb reference and resource cataloguing prime fishing creeks and locations throughout the Empire State, Flyfisher's Guide To New York is an enthusiastically recommended giftbook for anglers living or vacationing anywhere within New York State.

Very Insightful Guide to New York's Fishing

I was extremely pleased with Newman's guide to New York flyfishing. I'm very familiar with some of the areas he covered, and he did a very comprehensive job with those spots and how to fish them. He also got into areas that are not covered by the various Trout Unlimited guides around, and so introduced me to some new opportunities. Newman is a good writer, too, and I found myself enjoying his words on rivers and spots I'll probably never get to.

Where's the Fish?

In a 1980's presidential primary debate Walter Mondale famously quoted a Wendy's ad of the time, asking Gary Hart, "Where's the beef?"

This book attempts to answer a similar question as it relates to trout and other fly rod quarry in New York State.

As is the case with other similar guides its a useful starting point, but not much more.

You'll definitely get a general feel for the lay of the land in the region you're checking out. But to really home in on where the action is, you'll still want to infiltrate locations where grizzled geezers gather to try to learn what's biting where and on what.

The book is organized into South, Central, North and West regions. Within each, major watersheds are described. There's also information as to hub cities for various rivers complete with coordinates of fly shops, places to stay, and more. In addition major rivers have useful hatch calendars and stream characteristic bullet points to further flesh out the picture. While there are maps, these would be more useful with a bit more detail.

It's definitely a book that every NY angler should have for reference; just don't expect it to point you to the very best locations, which remain undisclosed...

Fierce - A Book That Empowers Girls and Women

Author - Leah Oviedo, has done a great service to women by writing this book. It's about connecting to your true female power, eg - expanding your mind, looking after your body and sexual self, having awareness and educating yourself on issues that primarily effect - the female. In today's society, 'girl power' is often an adage linked with the shallow - eg - materialism, image and sexualization. Leah's book encourages girls to dig deeper, to connect with their true source of power - their inner selves. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on gender bias and learnt about some things I wasn't aware of. I highly recommend this book, it is both vital and fierce.

What I love most about this book is that straight off the bat it lays out the foundation and encourages readers to "...be fierce and fight for a world where equality, truth and knowledge are our most cherished qualities." This idea flows into not one of admonishment (we know about negative self-talk, yes?) but one of focusing on precise questions we can ask ourselves in order to recognize that, yes, even to ourselves, we are truly love-able: we can embrace our bodies; we can enhance our minds (often by returning to what we enjoyed as a child and improving on that); we can explore the deeper aspects of our personalities and see that it is good!

This book helps the reader to think critically. The author provides helpful resources if we need to get out of a horrible situation in order to move forward. Aside from step-by-step help and outside resources, Oviedo references such gurus as Ghandi, includes a bill of rights, and offers the challenge, "...to survive or thrive. The choice is up to you."

These diaries landed immediately on the best-seller list after their publication (no prepub galleys were available for review). Historians, however, won't extract much beyond daily reminders of Nixon's bark-off persona, especially his habit of airing all options, from the ludicrous to the realistic. Chief of Staff Haldeman was the PR guy, the scheduler, the enforcer (the lord high executioner, Nixon once said) who, though totally trustworthy as a sounding board for his boss, was a nonsubstantive decision maker. Haldeman dramatically tells, for example, of the August 1971 demolition of the world financial system without exhibiting much understanding of the economic ramifications. At bottom, Haldeman's diary is another thimbleful poured into the huge vat of Nixonia; however, the book's juicy quotations (such as those Nightline ran) boost interest dramatically. Gilbert Taylor

Indispensable

H.R. Haldeman was the crew-cutted former J. Walter Advertising Executive who joined on the Nixon campaign as an Advance Man, a job that if it is done right, no one notices - but if it is done wrong can destroy a candidacy. Haldeman always made sure every detail was attended to and post-election went on to be one of the most in control and feared Chief of Staff's in Presidential history. Haldeman cashed in shortly after Watergate with his own memoir which he later said didn't turn out the way he wanted thanks to publishers, editors and so forth and hardly got the attention of other Watergate memoirs such as 'Blind Ambition' and 'Will'. We didn't hear much from Bob Haldeman after his release from the Federal Lockup in California. After his death however, according to his wishes, his wife released his diaries the fact that they even existed was a bombshell and they were as complete and detailed as one might expect from this meticulous organization man. These memoirs make you the fly on the wall of the Nixon White House and we witness it go from full of hope, thrill and promise to descending deep into the pit of Watergate until the "cancer" that John Dean described as growing on the Presidency consumes Haldeman himself and the diaries come to a close. A true historical artifact not to be missed.

Historians can retire now

This is unbelievable stuff for a historian. On the scene notes, taken immediately (Haldeman wrote this daily).

For a layman, it is revealing how little press this book has received, given the amazing information inside. Bretton Woods is covered to an extent I have not seen elsewhere, even though Haldeman himself doesn't seem to appreciate what was happening.

Watergate is of course covered in excruciating detail.

But what I found most interesting was the mundane day to day activities of Nixon, most of which appeared to be concerned with handling Kissinger. I strongly suspect the book could be extrapolated to most (all?) of his successors.

In summary: an invaluable peek into the Twentieth Century Executive branch.

Captivating Reading

It's amazing the amount of time spent on incidental and personality conflicts when the bigger issues were floating around the Nixon administration.

However, as a businessman, it is refreshing to know that the office of the CEO of the world's greatest power got (and probably still gets bogged down) in small issues, just like an corporation!

A great read. It was hard to put the book down.

Excellent material; edition lacking somewhat.

Of course Florence Scovel Shinn's material is the best. Just be aware that this is a half size, 39 page little pocket book, repeating a lot of what she includes in other books on love, money, intuition, etc.

If you want a little pocket book of Florence's words to carry with you in your purse or school backpack, this may do the trick. It is small and thin.

It wasn't what I was expecting but glad I bought it anyway, though I have all of FSS's other books.

History in books, if you'll stop babbling about Hollywood for a moment

Barry Commoner is now being forgotten by mainstream American culture. It forgets a lot.

This book, along with such things as "Silent Spring", is one of the primary texts marking and shaping the American (and world) awareness of the dangers posed to nature and the worldwide natural environment by home sapiens and our species increasingly multitudinous and potent activities. Back in the day, there was a tendency in the American popular media to define this threat in terms of increasingly powerful and inscrutable technology or increasing human population. Fools and polemicists tended to see this "either ... or", and Commoner was usually pointed out as holding that technology was the principal threat; indeed, he did in fact downplay increasing population as an independent factor in environmental degradation, holding that unsustainable population increase was largely a result of poverty, and by extension inappropriate or inequitably distributed technological access. Paul Ehrlich was usually the symbol of the population side. But this kind of artificial opposition wasn't inherent in what anyone who really thought was really thinking, however easy it was for genuine thinkers such as Commoner to get drawn into media-driven polemic.

From Chapter Ten, "Social Issues":

"Ecological survival does not mean the abandonment of technology. Rather, it requires that technology be derived from a scientific analysis that is appropriate to the natural world on which the technology intrudes."

The books systematically goes through the various issues as we saw them, in the day: the meaning of ecosystems, air, water, earth, social and economic issues, certain specially powerful dangers, such as nuclear technology. With the educated mutation of some mutanda, the book is still intellectually, not just historically valuable.

But history looms large in this one. For years, Barry Commoner was an competent and dignified proponent of sanity and caution in public matters. Unfortunately, he was one of few. I remember vividly his appearance on William F. Buckley's "Firing Line". After quite a few sallies by Buckley along the lines of "In your chapter on, you say ...", with responses along the lines of "No, actually, what I said there was ...", Commoner suddenly asked, when it was least expected, "Did you actually read this book?" Buckley hadn't expected the question, at least not then, so he was completely flummoxed. This was the kind of thing the establishment culture threw at people like Commoner. At least Buckley was more or less polite about it. His epigones have not been as polite, and it is increasingly clear that the populace listens to the polemicist, not scientists like Commoner.

Written over thirty years ago and now dated, The Closing Circle was one of the early important books on the environmental crisis. As a neophyte to this issue, one who was interested in gaining a better understanding and perspective, I still found this book profoundly useful.

Great info at a great price!

After checking this out I can honestly say that the program does indeed provide a great program for softball players who may have waited too long to prepare for the upcoming season and do not have much time left or just looking for a new way to train and prepare for their sport. Either way, as Marc mentions, this is for the serious softball player who basically wants to crank up their game. I looked at all the exercises and if followed as instructed and the athlete does not miss a workout they will see very noticeable results. If they do not notice results then they are most definitely not followed the program as described.

What I also like is the diagrams of the exercises. They are not just shown in a single format they show how the actual movement takes place.

For just $14.95 there is no way you can go wrong. Think of how much it would cost to hire a trainer for this info and for 21-days. Much more than $14.95, plus you have it with you at all times.

Most definitely a buy for someone looking to change their game who also do not wish to spend a ton of money.

Late getting in shape for the season? Here's your solution!

Marc Dagenais is a well-known expert on fitness for fastpitch softball, and with this book he once again demonstrates why. While he acknowledges in the beginning that the best approach is to maintain fitness year-round, he also is realistic enough to admit not everyone will do that. For players who suddenly realize they need to get in game shape and don't have a lot of time to accomplish it, this book offers a great path to fitness. One of the best things is rather than providing a generalized set of exercises, Marc uses his experience to deliver just what a softball player will need. He focuses on power and explosiveness, two key factors for success. Another good thing about the program is you don't need a lot of expensive or hard-to-access equipment. The program is designed to let players work out at their own convenience, mostly with things they already own (or can improvise around). For example, one of the workouts calls for four cones, but four of any object will work just as well. If you have three weeks to get ready for the season and want to be sure you show up ready to play, you'll want to buy this book. It's also great for coaches who need to get an entire team in shape, by the way!

First how can you go wrong on $14.95. Marc, has put together a great reference for any coach at ALL level's of play to include giving parent's the most updated and how to book on "Doing It right." Marc, is known world wide for his expertise in health and conditioning, and I must say especially in Softball. As a coach I don't have time to read a lot of detail "Stuff." information. I want to get to the bottom line so I can work with my players on the details. This book provides me this and more. If you just try the work out and be dedicated to it 100% and it does accomplish the results the price of the book is worth more to me then what I paid for it. I think coach's and parent's need to use the publication as a quick means showing them the "How to method" of getting ready for the season. I've known to many players that wait tell the last minute to get in playing shape, and we know you just can't do that. This book will help you do just that if it's applied. I would recommend this book to everyone. IT WORKS.!!
