About the Author
Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A recipient of the College Distinguished Teacher Award, he teaches psychology classes ranging in size from 15 to nearly 500 students. During the course of more than two decades as a college instructor, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, Virginia Commonwealth University, in addition to the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Feldman, who initiated the Minority Mentoring Program at the University of Massachusetts, also has served as a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and Senior Online Teaching Fellow. He initiated distance learning courses in psychology at the University of Massachusetts

A Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, Professor Feldman received a B.A. with High Honors from Wesleyan University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a winner of a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer award, and he has written more than 100 books, book chapters, and scientific articles. He has edited Development of Nonverbal Behavior in Children (Springer-Verlag), Applications of Nonverbal Behavioral Theory and Research (Erlbaum), and co-edited Fundamentals of Nonverbal Behavior (Cambridge University Press). He is also author of Child Development, Understanding Psychology, and P.O.W.E.R. Learning: Strategies for Success in College and Life. His books have been translated into a number of languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. His research interests include honesty and deception in everyday life and the use of nonverbal behavior in impression management, and his research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disabilities and Rehabilitation Research.

Professor Feldman loves music, is an enthusiastic pianist, and enjoys cooking and traveling. He has three children, and he and his wife, a psychologist, live in Amherst, Massachusetts, in a home overlooking the Holyoke mountain range.

I bought the e-book version for my class and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to use in the Kindle app on my iPad Mini. I have another app and textbook that I am using with another service and it is terrible in comparison!

The book itself is also easy to read and, overall, enjoyable. Is it one I'd read again and again? No. But the ease in which it discusses the topic of lifespans is helpful and enjoyable if you have to read it for class.

This book clearly states not for sale, Instructor review ...

This book clearly states not for sale, Instructor review copy, Protected by U.S. Copyright as well as having warnings not to sell it on the world wide web that were blacked out on the cover and inside pages. The back cover also clearly states NOT FOR SALE Job Control #50058.
The time it took to cover these warnings with black tape makes it clear that it was intentional and the book was sold illegally.
This book should have never been sold, and I am now unable to resell it once I have finished the course.

Useful for many fields and levels. It's quite good!

I bought this manual in high school (math, physics) and I have used it in the university (almost the whole manual) and even in the graduate school (for quick reference).
It is well organized, the concrete explanations are useful and you get you formula or data quickly, everywhere (easy to carry).
I bought another for my brother when he started studying engineering. I think it's indispensable.

A classic

This is a wonderful and unique little book that packs a lot of information into a pocket-sized hardbound volume.
The construction of the book is of the highest quality, something that's rare in this age of disposable, fluff-filled, high-ego publishing. It feels good and it's very satisfying as a physical object. Definitely something you'll keep forever or pass down to someone else.
The content is quite dense and concise, exactly what you want in a portable work like this.
This little book belongs in the library (or the pocket) of anyone with an interest in engineering, and some of the mathematical sections have an even wider appeal.

Sadly Disappointed - WANT to love it

First, please permit me to begin my review of Geicks' "Engineering Formulas" by offering one sobering postulate:

"Engineers who miscalculate can KILL people."

Bridges, machines, chemical processes, fire safety....the list goes on and on. Now, presumably those engineers engaged in design work where the protection of human life is a consideration will be experts in the required calculations; however, there are a myriad of "simple" calculations that go into such work (unit conversions, measurement, geometric computations, etc.) that can be just as important - and just as dangerous if misused.

It is for this reason that I was SHOCKED to find what I did when I opened my fresh, new version of Geicks' "Engineering Formulas": *errors*.

Now, it might just be a coincidence; I first opened to the "Differential Equations" section (I am presently teaching a class where this material is relevant) and began to read the first page (for those with the book, these are lines j7 to j9)):

"...Linear: ODE means, that the nighest exponent of the required function is one; i.e. an ODE of degree 1."

'NIGHEST'??? Literally, this means the "closest" (which would be totally incorrect).

OK, OK...this is just a simple typo - happens all of the time. You've got to give them a break. *Obviously*, it should have been 'highest' - most normal people would catch this.

So, I continued to read on to the next two lines:

"Homogeneous ODE implies the forcing function, q(x)=0
Inhomogeneous ODE implies the forcing function, q(x)=0"

Huh? They both mean the same thing? (Actually the second should have had q(x) being *not equal* to zero.)

Two errors in three lines of the first page that I read.

Now, granted: I was able to catch these errors and could easily jot down the corrections and move on. My questions, though are:

1 - If I found these two errors on the FIRST PAGE of the book that I looked up something for, how many errors might there be in the entire book?
2 - While I knew better and was aware that these were, in fact, errors, what would happen if I required the use of a erroneous formula that I was *not* so familiar with?
3 - Although this topic was hardly one where safety was involved, what would happen if such errors were to be found in the "Strength" or "Radiation Physics" sections of the book?
4 - Knowing what I now know, can I trust the next formula that I use? If not, what value does the book have?

I am not one to usually complain about editorial mistakes...but this is not a work of fiction or a history book; this is a text of *Engineering* formulas to be used by *Engineers*. A slight mistake in one symbol in one formula could literally cause a design to fail.

Again, this could all be coincidence and I might just be *far* too picky (and I certainly could never publish such a text myself without making many more errors).

Looking beyond these concerns, the text is well-organized, has a nice variety of topics, is small and durable, and is easy to read.

If the author(s) would like to contact me to show me my own mis-perceptions (or just plain 'errors'), I would say, "*Please* don't hesitate to." I WANT to love this book and I WANT to believe that this was all just a coincidence and I happened to open to the only page with such mistakes. This book *could* be VERY useful to a professional like me..

...but until then....?

Oh, one last point -

I had actually considered giving the book 3 stars instead of 2, but after flipping through the pages I found two torn pages (S13 and S14 - looks like a production flaw, especially considering that the book itself had a sealed plastic cover). The authors can't be blamed for this problem, but when one looks at the book as a "whole", it needs to be considered.

From book editors to manufacturing personnel, it just seems as though people are slowly becoming less competent (or, just caring less about quality of work). Sad.

As a millennial Republican, Anderson provides a way forward for the party.

The problem is the voting groups Republicans normally rely on are shrinking. Millennials are "flocking to denser areas (cities), they're less likely to go to church regularly, and they're less likely to get married." The millennial generation also happens to be the most diverse. Back in 1970s 89% of Jimmy Carter's voters were white and 1% Hispanic. Today, the percentage of Hispanic voters is at 10% and growing. As millennials become the biggest voting bloc, this shift in demographics sets up a bleak electorate for Republicans.

The good news is Republicans don't have to change their principles; they just need to reemphasize them in a more palpable way for Millennials. Anderson lists countless examples how we can do that. For example, Republicans need to make the case for "the perils of regulation and the power of the market." They need to back companies such as Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb, who are the epitome of innovation and free market. Anderson points to other examples such as Tesla, and even craft beers in Florida.

Anderson also looks at how Republicans brand themselves. Democrats have done a better job with branding Republican ideas than Republicans. Back in 2012, in an interview with MTV, the President took credit for deregulating SEC financial rules for donating money over the internet. This opened the door for crowdfunding through GoFundMe and Kickstarter pages. Deregulation? That sounds awfully Republican.

Anderson touches on social issues: gay marriage, the nuclear family, and the #blacklivesmatter movement. A reoccurring theme is Republicans ought to move forward with policies which empower the individual rather than get caught up in defining "family," or in the cross-hair of the importance of a movement. "We should not and cannot guarantee people equal outcomes, but we ought to strive for equal opportunity."

As a pollster, Anderson also covers how technology has changed the game of politics. President Obama had a great social media presence, but just because you can write a Facebook status does not automatically translate into votes. She touches on how Republicans are beginning to step up their digital game to get a better understanding of voters. Traditional marketing as we know it has become intertwined with politics.

Overall, #theSelfieVote is a great read for Millennials and a great read for anyone interested in the future of politics. It really highlights the rapid changes in politics within the last ten years. The selfie generation has changed the game, and those unwilling to adapt will be left behind.

After spinning his wheels in series opener The Lost Hero (2010), Riordan regains his traction with book two of The Heroes of Olympus. Gaea is raising an army of giants to defeat the gods, and Juno has switched heroes Percy Jackson (son of Poseidon) and Jason Grace (son of Jupiter) in order to unite Greek and Roman gods and demigods in battle against her. Great Story, but Early Kindle Version was Riddled with Typos

The Heroes of Olympus series is best selling author Rick Riordan's spinoff of the Percy Jackson novels. This is the second in the series, following the introduction of the Roman hero, Jason Grace. As expected, Percy joins up with Roman forces and we are introduced to two new main characters: Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque. As usual in a Riordan tale, the perspective changes from chapter to chapter among the main protagonists.

Riordan is maturing nicely as a writer, and each new book shows an emerging style that is both engaging and descriptive. Fans of previous Riordan books will find familiar elements, such as nods to popular culture. For instance, in Seattle the heroes find that Amazon.com is run by Amazon warriors, who are often found reading their Kindles.

Educational elements are skillfully intertwined in Riordan books, and this one is no exception. Young readers are introduced to Greek and Roman mythology and pick up quite a bit of classical detail despite the fact the story is modernized to a considerable extent. Even though the story is dealing with pagan gods of antiquity, quite a few Christian elements shine through, such as love, friendship, and shared sacrifice.

Character development remains strong, and retains typical Riordan memes such as teen angst and finding ones purpose in life (albeit from a demigod's perspective). Fans will enjoy most all aspects of learning about and caring for Zhang and Levesque as well as other minor characters.

My biggest beef with the Kindle version of the novel I downloaded was the plethora of typos. Odd paragraph breaks were very common, and words were often smashed together to the point of distraction. For instance, here's part of a sentence that typifies mistakes in the text: "... no wall she had to worry about ..." It should read, "... now all she had to worry about ..." Mistakes like that went on chapter after chapter.

Today, Amazon sent an e-mail indicating the publisher is aware of these many mistakes in the electronic text and offered a corrected version. As I have already finished the book, and waded through the errors, it's no big deal. One of the benefits of electronic books is the ability to quickly fix mistakes, but a simple read through by somebody in charge could have prevented these many errors from appearing in early electronic versions in the first place. That said, I'll take off a star from an otherwise five star book

A sequel to Lost Hero

This was much better than I could ever have expected. I just love this Percy Jackson series and the characters.The Heros of Olympus continues where the previous book one ended. The author
introduces us to new demigods in Roman Camp. We are also wondering what happened to Percy, where is he? and the author continues to reveal the clues to that mystery at the new camp.
There are lots of new demigods in this second book, and especially one is interesting:
Hazel. She is the daughter of Pluto. She has the ability to change earth to precious metals and jewels but there is a curse attached to that ability for those who find or accept them.
Another new hero is Frank Zhang, Mars' son. remember that Percy was not in good relations with Mars-god and now the author introduces another child of Mars...)

A new quest involves Thanatos, the guardian of the underworld, who has been taken into captivity and his absence has caused serious trouble (read the book to learn what!).

This is a great, adventure-filled book for young readers and they will love it just like all the other Percy books!

Two books in and still a promising series

Excellent read! The book flowed fantastically and Riordan really has improved his writing skill since the days of "The Lightning Thief." I was not able to put the book down for the entire time I was reading. The book has some obvious challenges, being the 2nd of 5 books, however Riordan stands to the challenge well and does a good job by allowing this adventure to be (mostly) stand alone, while fleshing out character's and plot for subsequent books. Our new characters, Hazel and Frank are amusing narrators who are fully capable of bring in new perspectives to the 7 Demigod team.

My main complaint is that this book clearly does follow Riordan's typically outline (get quest, work under time constraint, travel the world/USA, get into trouble along the way, save the day) and, after reading the Percy Jackson Series and the Kane Chronicles, this can get a little repetitive. Despite this predictability, I still find Riordan's writings incredibly entertaining and it is always exciting to learn which geographical locations and Greek/Roman gods he will bring in next.

I am excited to say that the series as a whole looks like it is headed for an excellent conclusion. When Riordan started this series I was initially worried that the series could only be an underdeveloped disappointment. However, upon finishing the second book I have become optimistic about the series. The characters and series plot is growing to be well developed, original, and interesting.

As a warning to any readers: the book has a very frustrating cliffhanger! I was very disappointed when I realized I had just finished the book.

My largest complaint, as I think someone has already noted, is that the Kindle version is filled with unnecessary typos and errors. While this isn't reflected in my star ratings since it doesn't reflect Riordan's writing, it was extremely disappointing that Amazon published such a low quality adaptation. UPDATE: Amazon has re-released the text without the typos!

Excellent primer on Winnicott

Renowned, revered, kind-hearted D.W. Winnicott (1896-1971) was a pediatrician and then a child analyst whose contributions to theories of child development and psychology (mothering, love, language, attachment, dependency, anxiety and many other topics) were enormous. Phillips' book illuminates Winnicott's body of work and includes a chronology. The tone is respectful and insightful and Phillips' knack for skillful explanation and analysis is here. But he knows Winnicott's work -- and life -- by heart, and has written extensively on him elsewhere, and occasionally in this work he meshes the two -- biography and work -- so seamlessly that I wished for more. As an intro to Winnicott's ideas, this is first-rate.

Wonderful Straightforward Scholarship Sans Idealization

Having read and studied and taught Winnicott over many years I was not surprised, but delighted at how well the writer (first?) and eminent psychoanalyst introduces and explains the man and his ideas to the beginner and the expert in study.
One of the great gifts of this book is the plain jargon free language he uses to describe the simple and the complex about this somewhat strange and wonderful man Winnicott. It is a writing style that harkens back in some ways to the wonderful papers Winnicott read to the mothers fathers,educators. pastors and other "ordinary people" in his day in which he seemed to take so much pleasure.
Adam Phillips added to a deeper understanding of the man for me and does a wonderful job of placing the pediatrician
a in the history of this strange, wonderful, and fractured discipline.
While Phillips alongside his colleagues and friends Christopher Bollas and Michael Eigen may well know and understand Winnicott as well as anyone else in the field, he does something Winnicott would have surely appreciated.
That is, he fails to idealize him.

Excellent Book!!

This book is excellent: well-written and very informative as well as concise (150 pgs). I would recommend this book for both professionals in the field wanting to delve more deeply into Winnicott - and for interested lay people with a psychological bent. It helped me enormously to understand my early experiences with my mother. This unlocked a great deal of rich material that enabled me to gain more inner freedom.

About the Author
Arthur Waley (1889-1966) taught himself Chinese and Japanese after being appointed Assistant Keeper of Oriental Prints and Manuscripts at the British Museum. He was one of the most respected translators of Asian classics into English of his time, with his translated works including The Tale of Genji, Monkey (The Journey to the West) , The Noh Plays of Japan and The Analects of Confucius.

You're only getting a quarter of the book.

Arthur Waley is undoubtedly a very important figure in the translation of Asian literature into English. But, as far as Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book is concerned, he should not have undertaken this translation. He has only translated a quarter of the work and has omitted all the passages he felt were dull or required too many citations to explain.

This undoubtedly may be the case, but as a fan of Japanese literature and the Zuihitsu genre, and having already read Kenko's Tsurezuregusa, I think I would rather be the judge of what is dull.

Had I researched this well beforehand, I would definitely have avoided this purchase. For readers who want a shortened version of the original, to just capture the essence of this book, this purchase would be excellent. For those seeking the full text, this will disappoint.

A misleading version of a wonderful Literary work

Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book is one of the greatest Japanese literary works. It is a challenging work. Wrote during Heian era Japan over a 1000 years ago its author Sei Shonagon, as she was known at the imperial court, wrote numerous musings about her life, recorded events that happened at the palace and documented the everyday. While the subject matter may seem stuffy the reality is quite different. Sei Shonagon is funny and her musings transcend time. Her ideas on fashion, irritation with others at court and aspirations of romantic love are similar to the same topics found in contemporary literature.

The difficult part of The pillow book is that it is not really in any order. depending on the publisher the book is usually divided in sections: Essays, journals and lists. the essays are usually her thoughts on life, her feelings and her ideas about things. The Journals recollect events at the palace and life in the Heian court. And lastly are lists. Sei Shonagon made near endless lists about numerous things. The most beautiful bridges. Noises that irritate. Considering this was wrote so long ago its a nice reminder that people, despite changes in our environment really haven't changed that much.

This version is only a portion of the pillow book and as such is incomplete. While I found the cover attractive compared to other versions offered on amazon as well as other retailers this is quite an inferior offering. To truly enjoy you should purchase another version.

I passed over this version because of the idiotic subtitle that someone at the publishing house tacked onto ...

I purchased a different edition of the Waley "translation" from Amazon (see my ,full review there). I passed over this version because of the idiotic subtitle that someone at the publishing house tacked onto it: "Diary of a tenth-century Courtesan" First, it is NOT a diary, although the limited selections Waley chose to translate are mostly narrative reminiscences and not representative of the entire work at all, so it may seem like a diary.
But most importantly, SHONAGON WAS NOT A COURTESAN. She was lady-in-waiting for the Empress Sadaka, a member of the royal court. She most emphatically was NOT a high-priced call girl.
With that title, this book should never have seen the light of day.

About the Author
Thomas R. Arp received a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan (1954) and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Stanford University. In 1955-1956, he produced educational television for the University of Michigan. He received an M.A. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1962 -- both from Stanford. He taught at Bowdoin College, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Hull University (England), and Southern Methodist University. Macmillan published his volume THE FORM OF POETRY in 1966, and he received a Fulbright lectureship at University of Bucharest (Romania) in 1969-1970. Arp joined Laurence Perrine in preparing revised editions of SOUND AND SENSE, STORY AND STRUCTURE, and LITERATURE: STRUCTURE, SOUND, AND SENSE beginning in 1982. He became sole author of the books in 1997 and was joined by Greg Johnson in 2002. Dr. Arp passed away in 2015.

Greg Johnson received an M.A. in English from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in English from Emory University. Dr. Johnson is the author of 12 books of fiction, poetry, criticism, and biography, including LAST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ENEMY (Johns Hopkins, 2004), WOMEN I'VE KNOWN: NEW AND SELECTED STORIES (Ontario Review, 2007), the novel STICKY KISSES (Alyson Books, 2001), and several books on Joyce Carol Oates, including INVISIBLE WRITER: A BIOGRAPHY OF JOYCE CAROL OATES (Dutton, 1998) and JOYCE CAROL OATES: CONVERSATIONS 1970-2006 (Ontario Review, 2006). He joined the author team of PERRINE'S LITERATURE in 2002 and has been the sole author since Thomas Arp's passing in 2015.

A Superb Introduction to Poetry and Poetic Form

I came across an early edition of Sound and Sense a few years ago. At first glance the slighty yellowed text appeared foreboding with chapters like denotation and connotation, imagery, figurative lanaguage, allusion, tone, rhythm and meter, sound and meaning, and so forth. I found it hard to imagine a less lifeless approach to poetry. However, the text did seem to contain a sizeable anthology as an appendix and poetry was abundant in every chapter. I reasoned that I could skip the poetic structure discussions and simply read the poetry.

But from the beginning I found Perrine's style and approach to be stimulating, rather than analytical. Throughout we are immersed in poetry, great poetry, familiar poetry, unfamiliar poetry. Perrine argues that poetry needs to be read and reread carefully for full understanding and appreciation. We need to learn to think about poetry with some seriousness, but not in a cold, calculating manner. We approach new poetry with our eyes and ears open, our senses alive.

Yes, as other reviewers point out, Sound and Sense is structured and does methodically explore poetic forms in some detail. But this is not a drawback. It is actually an aid to understanding. Perrine manages to achieve his instructional objective without diluting his central message: poetry is to be enjoyed. He never forgets that his subject is poetry, and not poetic form and structure.

I have since learned that Perrine's text is still in use today, nearly fifty years after publication of the first edition. (See recent 10th edition 0155073966, June 8, 2000.) How can that be? Few textbooks achieve ten printings, much less ten editions. Even the title change signifies respect; it is no longer simply Sound and Sense, it is "Perrine's Sound and Sense".

I highly recommend Perine's text to anyone willing to invest a little time and study to poetry. The return will be worthwhile. I give Sound and Sense five stars.

Excellent for use with students

I am currently using this book with 11th grade English students, and they have been truly caught up in it. We are actually having arguments in class over poetry!! I do find, however, that it is helpful to do the chapter on rhythm and meter much earlier than I would if I were following the chapters in order. My experience is that students have a difficult time hearing the rhythm of poetry and are generally unable to read aloud with any success. Jumping ahead early to the chapter on rhythm and meter and having the students tap out the meters and then mark the scansion produces a wonderful improvement in their ability to hear the poems and read them aloud. I would heartily recommend this book for use in grades 11 and 12, and for college freshman. It makes the study of poetry hugely enjoyable, as it should be but rarely is, for both student and teacher.
