What BarCharts are NOT: a comprehensive study guide. You cannot do well on a law school exam or bar exam relying solely upon BarCharts. That is not their purpose.

What BarCharts ARE: a condensed overview of the black letter law. Use them as a quick reference to understand the material during the semester. Use them as a REVIEW of the material you (should) have already studied for the exam.

In law school, BarCharts were the last thing I skimmed over before taking an exam. It's a good refresher.

Same with the bar exam. I skimmed over my BarCharts both nights before the exam.

Scorza, a formidable Latin American author

Redoble por Rancas is part of the pentalogy of novels written by Scorza, that constitutes along with La Danza Inmovil his immortal legacy to Latin American literature. Rancas, that humble village in the middle of Peru is just a metaphore for the underprivileged all over Latin America. The abuses of the dominant elite, the absurdity of this oppression are challenged against all hope by the indigenous peasants. Behind the inevitable humor is a fierce criticism of the landowners, the big corporations, and the complicity of corrupt local authorities. It is the brutality of the repression that brings the reader to think of the immense tenderness that Scorza uses to paint his characters. However, this book cannot be read alone. You must try to get the other four: El Cantar de Agapito Robles, Garabombo El Invisible (my favorite), El Jinete Insomne, y La Tumba del Relampago.

A great story with rich quechua heritage

I think this book successfully portrays the abuses committed by international corporations in the forgotten Andean region. The cruelty and abuses of the mining company as well as of the government towards the indigenous farmers of Rancas contrasts the witting and funny descriptions of events that may seem small but have a greater significance to the development of the story. The author does a great job in narrating a true story mixed with the magical realism style of Latin American writers. This is the first book I read from this author and I am truly happy I picked this book to read because I have learned that injustice and abuses towards the indigenous people of South America have not stopped since the Spanish first arrived there. This book really transported me into the story and made me more aware of the clash between the Inca and Spanish legacy in south America. It is time that the prejudices and wrong conceptions left by the Spanish are obliterated from south America so that they can all solve their problems together. I love this book. I highly recommend it!!

Beautifull produced, but not very readable.

This is a beautifully produced book, but it lacks readability. I love owning it. I love the idea of the student questioning the master, but the book could be much improved by including a copy of the letters designed to be read easily. I bought the book so I could read and study the letters. I received the letters, but it's hard to read them. My expectations were different than the goal of the publisher.

A wonderful story

A boy who is raised around people who are racists is shipwrecked at sea with an elderly Jamaican man. He has to confront internally what he was raised to believe as his eyes and ears are gradually opened to the reality. Superficially this is a story of survival at sea and on a deserted island as well as dealing with dangerous storms. That makes for a great adventure. But the real significance is the boy's overcoming prejudice and embracing the old man who teaches him so much. My 8 year old loved it. It opened up frank conversations about the bad old days when black people were treated badly and how people still wrestle with their embedded prejudices.

This book is my "go to" read aloud for spring in my 5th grade class. I haven't met a group of 5th graders that did not like this book. It makes a great read aloud as some explanation needs to happen about World War II. Students beg for you to keep reading which is a great testimony of the exceptional writing of Theodore Taylor allowing today's children to have a somewhat understanding of how it was socially as well as the hardships these characters had to face in The Cay.

Is Lord Lucan still alive? What happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste? Where is Boudicca buried? In this handsomely illustrated volume the author describes some of the great and not so great missing people, places and things of history. Each entry is short and the author describes the mystery and proposed solutions. Except to rule out the unlikiest solutions, Mr. Smith generally does not try to solve the mysteries. Nevertheless, this is an entertaining book that may encourage you to look for more detailed accounts of some of the missing.

I was not planning on reading the book as soon as I purchased it due to my long list of books to read. I said I will just read the first few pages, as soon as I started reading I got hooked and stayed up late. I still did not finish reading the book and I usually don't give reviews before completing the book but as soon as I reached page 42, the last two lines of that page contain a secret that I thought I only knew about that secret changes the universe laws to work on your favor and make you a successful entrepreneur. No matter what you are going through, no matter what obstacles you are facing, that secret in page 42 last two lines will open the doors of Rizq for you!

I'm really glad to see a book on these topics ie: entrepreneurship & self-development from the islamic point of view in ENGLISH! I've been lately reading some books about these issues but as a muslim, I felt there was something missing... Since Islam is really a way of life that does not limit itself to rituals and sprirituality, but rather encompasses all others areas of this wordly life such as business in this case, having this resource on how to build the proper mindset and practices towards success is much needed for muslim entrepreneurs. I think, this is a great contribution to this ummah, and hope that there will be more initiatives in the future from the author or others for more books in this topic.

A History of Alcatraz Island 1853-2008 Gregory L. Wellman

The book "A History of Alcatraz Island 1853-2008" by Gregory L. Wellman is fabulous. The photographs are numerous, as are the descriptions of the lives of the prisoners and those employed. It is written so you are pulled into every word, not just reading it, but feeling what it would have been like all those years ago. I suggest History of Alcatraz Island, 1853-2008 (Images of America: California) this book to everyone who enjoys history, or just interesting reading.

If you want to know about "the Rock" this is the book to read. It is very well done and really captures the history of Alcatraz.

Good read for Alcatraz buffs.

Very good information (with plenty of pictures) of the history of Alcatraz. I've always been interested in Alcatraz (have read some other books too) and found reading this book an easy read and really enjoyable. I finished reading it the same day I got it. Especially interesting to me was what had happened to all the buildings that were there when it was a prison. Many buildings are now gone and it's hard to even find photographs of the way it used to look. I had assumed the Indian occupiers burned them all down but now found out through reading this book that they burned down four of them (Wardens Home, Medical examiner, and lighthouse care person, and Social Hall) and the rest were torn down by the government after the Indians left. Torn down were the large Buildings A B and C near the Parade Grounds along with several bungoloes, the assoc Warden's home, and some others on the Parade Grounds. Such a shame to see the history gone. Taking a tour now reveals a shell of what it used to look like. Anyway, good read for those who are interested in Alcatraz history (I eat this stuff up). What I wouldn't give to spend a day on Alcatraz with Jolene Babyak (who lived on the island and wrote a book) to pick her brains about Alcatraz.

Scientific Farm Animal Production is distinguished by an appropriate combination of both breadth and depth of livestock and poultry production and their respective industries. The book gives an overview of the biological principles applicable to the Animal Sciences, with chapters on reproduction, genetics, nutrition, lactation, consumer products, and other subjects. The book also covers the breeding, feeding, and management of beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, swine, poultry, goats, and aquaculture. Although books have been written on each of these separate subjects, the authors have highlighted the significant biological principles, scientific relationships, and management practices in a condensed but informative manner. TARGET AUDIENCE

This book is designed as a text for the introductory Animal Science course typically taught at universities and junior or community colleges. It is also a valuable reference book for livestock producers, vocational agriculture instructors, and others desiring an overview of livestock production principles and management. The book is basic and sufficiently simple for urban students with limited livestock experience, yet challenging for students who have a livestock production background. KEY FEATURES

Chapters 1-9 cover animal products and give an overview of the livestock and poultry industries, Chapters 10-22 discuss the biological principles, while livestock, poultry, and aquaculture management practices are presented in Chapters 23-38.

The book is designed to accommodate several instructional approaches to teaching the introductory course: (1) the life-cycle biological principles approach, including such areas as consumer products, reproduction, breeding, nutrition, and animal health; (2) the species approach (teaching the course primarily in reference to the various species); or (3) a combination of the previous two. The latter appears to be the most popular teaching approach, covering principles in lecture and combining principles and species into laboratory exercises.

Some instructors will assign one or more papers on a topic selected by them or the students. The references at the end of each chapter are designed for students who want or need to explore certain topics in more depth.

Most instructors will not have sufficient time in their courses to assign all the chapters. Course outlines can be developed to include the chapters assigned and put them in the sequence that meets an instructor's preference. CHANGES IN THIS EDITION

This edition has been updated with current technical and applied information. Whenever possible, tables and figures have been revised with current data. A chapter on aquaculture has been added to the text, and major revisions of the careers chapter (37), the species breeding and management chapters (25-36), and the reproduction chapter (10) have been made. This revision provides more detail in terms of selection strategies and tools, management benchmarks, endocrinology, and food safety issues. The emphasis on bioeconomics and global perspectives has been continued. About the Author

Robert E. Taylor was raised on an Idaho livestock operation where several livestock species were produced. He received a B.S. degree in animal husbandry and a Master's degree in animal production from Utah State University. This background, combined with his Ph.D. work in animal breeding and physiology from Oklahoma State University, provided much depth to his knowledge of livestock production. He has had practical production experience with beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, and swine.

 

Dr. Taylor received teaching awards at Iowa State University (where he also managed a swine herd) and at Colorado State University. He also received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Society of Animal Science in recognition of his ability to organize and present materials to students. Many of his concepts for effective teaching are used in this book. Dr. Taylor passed away in 1998.

 

Thomas G. Field was raised on a Colorado cow-calf and seedstock enterprise. He managed a seedstock herd of cattle after completing his B.S. degree. A competitive horseman as a youth, he has had practical experience with seedstock cattle, commercial cow-calf production, stockers, and horses. He has a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in animal science from Colorado State University.

 

Dr. Field has received teaching awards from the USDA National Excellence in Teaching program, the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, the American Society of Animal Sciences, and Colorado State University. Dr. Field is the teaching coordinator for the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University and is responsible for coordinating the teaching herd.

This book is required for my college class on the subject of farm animal production. It is written well enough, but I find it quite biased in favor of factory farm animal production, treating organic food production and small farms as quaint, expensive, and inefficient while lightly touching on the problems associated with CAFOs.

Propaganda at it's finest

True this book has some very basic agricultural knowledge, including chapters on things like eggs, wool, beef, poultry etc - but there are lines in the book that literally churned my stomach. The beef and poultry industries may as well have written this book themselves. My favorite that I came across so far was in the Dairy chapter where it informs you that lactose intolerance can be overcome by consuming more dairy. I'm sorry - but I continued to consume dairy for over 10 years while they tried to figure out what my "mystery illness" was and it ended up being a food allergy to dairy. Being a biology major I love how so much of what is said in this book as random comments seems to NOT be based in scientific fact. I mean sure the diagram of the egg is great, but when there are comments about people overblowing health issues of these foods it leaves me questioning the validity of the rest of the book. If you're already drinking the kool-aid of the various industries then you will be fine with this book - but if you have taken classes like Microbiology or Immunology then you'll be left scratching your head as you try to reconcile the information contained within.
