About the Author

Benoît Gomis is an international security analyst focusing on terrorism and organized crime. While writing this book, he was a visiting scholar at the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society (TSAS), based at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He is an associate fellow with Chatham House, a researcher at Simon Fraser University, and an associate faculty member at Royal Roads University. In an independent capacity, he is a consultant for organizations including think tanks, universities, NGOs and governments.

About the Author

Paolo J. Knill is one of the founders of the expressive arts therapy program at Lesley University, USA and is the Provost of the European Graduate School (EGS) in Switzerland, which offers MA and PhD degrees in expressive arts therapy. Ellen G. Levine and Stephen K. Levine are co-founders of the ISIS-Canada training programme in expressive arts therapy. Ellen is the Dean of Independent Study in expressive arts therapy, education, and consulting at the EGS and Stephen is the Dean of the Doctoral Programme.

All three authors have published extensively in the field, with two of their works, Foundations of Expressive Arts Therapy and Poiesis, published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

Couldn't put it down

Tragic, historical, beautifully written story that will bring tears to your eyes and pull at your heart strings. This is a redone, biblical version of the story of Hosea but it's set in the 1800s Gold Rush California.
This is not for the faint of heart. The story revolves around a young girl accidentally sold into prostitution and the trials she goes through to find love with the man who becomes her husband and God. There are implied scenes that will make you cringe and some graphic scenes that made my stomach pitch and roll. This is a relatively long story, 497 pages, so be prepared for the roller coaster of emotions. I'm not one for biblical books but the biblical portion here is not overwhelming at all. It's actually written so well, you'll find yourself wrapped up in the story instead.
I highly recommend this as I have never been so moved by a book in my life. More than once I found myself screaming at the book, crying to myself and praying for a happy ending. Just make sure you set aside time to read where you won't be interrupted and bring tissues!!

Powerful, heart-retching and thought provoking! An excellent illustration of grace in action! See a young girls struggle through sexual slavery and reluctant deliverance. See a young man's aching commitment to a reluctant bride and to his Sovereign Lord! See the joy that can come through the acceptance of forgiveness and grace! From a strictly human perspective, this story seems impossible but, God can make all things possible through Him, for our good and His glory! Not for young readers (recommend high school or older)!!

I knew it was a semi-modern retelling of the Hosea story, and I knew it had really good reviews, but I was honestly not even the slightest bit prepared for how well the book was written.

I saw it recommended by someone/somewhere (have no idea who or where anymore), and I ordered it before finally picking it up to read a couple of weeks ago. The story will touch you in so many ways, it was just plain crazy how many times I was literally crying and praying and crying some more from something I had read. Francine does an amazing job at showing the unfailing love of God through these characters - I can only aspire to some day be the man/husband/father that the character Michael Hosea was in this story.

I just really can't say enough about this book!!

Loved the Light

I love a book like this that I can jump around to different chapters. No need to "begin at the beginning." I have to say that I enjoyed Keidi's own story of her Light experience more than any of the others. Entering different dimensions and meeting higher beings there is so cool. I was drawn to "Healing the Past" because I teach a form of that in my own work. The uncorrected past blocks us until we drop it, and this was also the opinion of the author, Mr. Waterborn. My next favorite part was "Manifesting Miracles." Dr. Morter gives us lessons in Miracle Making 101. I have always felt like Dr. Morter that miracles are natural events that we miss because our sight is not finely tuned enough. This whole book is one big miracle, and I love the way it made its way to the world. Magical path, indeed.

Do yourself a favor, and experience (not read) this book. Whenever you are down, pick it up and start reading anywhere in it. The Light will guide you to what you need in that moment. Try it and see. you will be as amazed as I was. Enjoy!

Keidi has done an amazing job. Her work with so many fantastic luminaries is awe inspiring. It's nice to find more authors writing positive and encouraging works today. I'm excited and pleased to have this book in my collection, and happily recommend it to anyone who wishes to find positive literary works of art.

A Compendium of Wisdom and Inspiration

Before the publication of this highly enjoyable and wonderful book, I interviewed Keidi Keating for "Sharing Your Passion", my interview film series.
What struck me then and remains so now is the uniqueness of Keidi's project. Here was a young lady assembling a cast of twenty-two highly evolved souls to produce a book, not only on how they each came to find the light within themselves, but also on how "we" - the readers - might also do so.
This compendium of souls had, Keidi explained, mentored or helped her in some way.
"The book is my way of giving back," she said. "I want to share the wisdom. It's not "my" book; I see it as selfless service..."
Keidi's selflessness is epitomised by the book's non-commercial status. All of the net profits go to charity. Keidi has thus created something which entirely benefits others - well, almost! I say "almost" only because I foresee Keidi getting a lot of kudos and praise for what she has manifested here, and deservedly so.

The book is non-fiction - just to be clear. Still it contains many wonderful stories. It is of course about light, but in the spiritual sense, and in the metaphoric sense and in the individual awakening sense. It looks at light from the sensory and non-sensory perspectives. And it is about seeing the world in a different, positive and uplifting light
For example, I am not a Quantum Physicist but, if I were, I would probably tell you that everything is energy. Since everything means everything, light is also energy. And so everything is also light. We humans are light, even though it appears to our five senses that we are physical bodies. And so we are capable of so much more than what we believe we can do with and in our physical bodies.
Light is used as a metaphor throughout the book. This is light as awareness, as in the phrase "seeing the light."
Investigating the so-called "Inner Light", also known as "the True Self", "the Soul" or "the Heart," the book illustrates the importance of acknowledging this light as part of the Oneness of who we are, so that we may, for example, allow the light to flow and so allow life itself to create through us.

The book is a rich source of wisdom and inspiration. I particularly liked the following:

"Once the need to survive is removed from the Mind's experience, the Soul has the space and freedom to express it's true nature. We then start walking through the world in an entirely different way; no longer stressing and straining, no longer competing, no longer looking for the advantage, no longer needing, wanting or asking for anything. We simply stand in the space of life with a single and simple question: "How may I serve you, how may I love you, how may I be here with you in such a way that you know exactly who you really are?" - Neale Donald Walsh

"Only through more loving can more things be healed" - John Roger

"Today corporations, not governments control global economics. We are those corporations. Many of us work for them and almost all of us buy from them. Up until now, we have sent a strong message that we want high quality but inexpensive shirts and jeans and that if they are made in sweat shops in Asia or Latin America, we will turn a blind eye and look the other way. The book covers considerable ground. There is so much you can find here - from the power of feng shui to the power of forgiveness; from reversing the ageing process to working with angels; from releasing blockages to living as unconditional love. And I am just touching the surface!

Without naming the writers concerned - buy the book and see for yourself - I loved the chapters on flowing with the river of light, the divine artist, the colours of love and understanding the light, respectively. And when I read the book again, I may give you a different selection!
This is a book to refer back to, one that I will certainly re-read, and maybe more than once. And, as with many of the best spiritual books, I sense I will find something new every time I dip in.

To read The Light is to be reminded of who we really are or, if you prefer, who we really can be. The reader is given many paths and opportunities and ample encouragement, not only to see life in a much bigger light but to fully embrace it. And there are practical exercises to help!

The book is not for everyone. And I do not say that lightly! In Keidi's own words, "anybody who is meant to find the book, will find it..."

Well, you have found the book. Ergo, you are meant to read it. And I predict that you will be delighted!

I got this book because of how much I appreciated professor Freedman's "Open Yale" course on the early middle ages. He organized a lot of information and made it interesting. He did the same with this book. It has insight into history, social trends, the business of running a restaurant, and, of course, a lot about food. I read it on my Kindle. I think I missed some of the detail from the menus, but it was a treat to be able to touch a word and immediately see the definition! (I even got an invitation to download the French dictionary.) My thanks to the author for an amazing amount of research made so interesting.

A MUST READ for anyone interested in restaurant history. Wow.

This is a great book for anyone interested in restaurant/culinary history. The restaurants themselves are interesting, but what I found the most fascinating was how the author captured each era as it related to contemporary society. At first I thought this might be tedious, but once I read into just a few pages, I was completely engrossed by the detail and very thorough research which was presented in such a delightful way. What a fabulous read.

Excellent information. A bit of a slow read.

This is a very well researched and authoritative book. I found it very interesting and informative. If you are not a bit of a foodie, it probably is not for you. You certainly could make a case for the inclusion of other restaurants, but the author does a very good job of referencing others and explaining his rationale for inclusion of the institutions that were discussed.

The book is very detailed and scholarly. This is for me, a plus and a minus. The information is extensive and well documented. For me this resulted in a book which felt over long and drawn out. Much as I was interested, and wanted to read it, I found myself slogging through it, wishing each section was just a bit shorter. If I were deeply interested in the content, or an academic or scholar I would have reveled in it. As a slightly less engaged reader, I wish it felt somewhat less ponderous.

I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of menus from the various restaurants. As an aside, having read it on a reader vs. a hard copy, the menus were sometimes blurry and difficult to read. This was a source of frustration for me since I found them so interesting.

This is the third and last volume of John Grainger’s history on the Seleucid Empire. It covers a period of a bit more than a century and it is probably the less known (and perhaps also the less studied) part of their history. The book, and the little-known story of the decline of a once-powerful Empire, has several considerable merits, and perhaps also a couple of problems.

I have already mentioned the first of these merits. There are few, if any, modern and accessible accounts in English on the last century of the Seleucid Empire.

The second merit is to show that the decline and fall was not engineered by Rome, contrary to what is often still believed. One of the qualities of this book is precisely to show that the loss of Asia Minor and the peace treaty that Antiochus III had to sign following his defeat did not cripple his Empire. Asia Minor was not one of the core provinces of the Empire. The clauses of the treaty seem to have been largely ignored by the Seleucid King and his immediate successors and not enforced by the Romans, at least initially. In addition, the last Seleucid king was not deposed by the Romans but by Tigrane, King of Armenia, which was a kingdom that was once a vassal of the Seleucid Empire.

The third merit is to identify the root cause of the Fall: the inability to resist and check the expansion of the Parthians, also once a vassal kingdom. However, John Grainger shows that this inability had little to do with military weakness. Instead, he identifies the main cause of the decline and fall as being the breakdown of the normal order of succession by which the King nominated his successor – almost always his eldest surviving son. This lead to multiple bouts of debilitating civil war with the crown becoming up for grabs from whoever commanded sufficient military support to take it. As well shown by the author, the precedent for this was set with the reign of the rather ruthless Antiochus IV Epiphane who displaced and disposed of his much younger nephew whose father had died while he was still young.

Another interesting feature is to show to what extent the Jewish sources on the rebellions of the Maccabees can be misleading in several respects. The main point made here is that these rebellions were for a long time mere sideshows for the Seleucids, at least up until they had lost both Media and Mesopotamia, that is two out of the three core regions of the Empire. This left the Seleucids with only the third (Syria), which also started to fragment and was torn by further civil wars between various pretenders to the crown.

As mentioned at the beginning of this review, the book also has a couple of problems. The first cannot be blamed on the author and has to do with the rather complex narrative with multiple Kings and pretenders baring the same names and something competing for the throne (several Antiochus, for instance). This can make the book somewhat difficult to read and the story difficult to follow at times, especially for a general reader. A genealogy of the Seleucids partly addresses this point although it unfortunately does not include the dates of reign of the various monarchs.

A second, perhaps more controversial, point is one of the ones made in the conclusion. The author does emphasise, and quite correctly, that the Seleucid Empire is the only of the great Hellenistic kingdoms to have suffered a kind of disintegration in slow motion. However, I could not help feeling that explaining this away by simply stating that the Empire was doomed to fail from the start was a bit superficial. Moreover, claiming that such a failure occurred because its power was based on a very narrow Greco-Macedonian population base may also be a bit of an oversimplification, especially if one considers that a large portion of the Seleucid heavy cavalry was made up of Persian and Median nobles.

Four stars for a valuable book, even if some of the author’s statements and positions may seem a bit controversial or even questionable at times.

This is a brief review of Vol. 3 of John Grainger's three volume work on the entire course of the Seleukid Kingdom. The full title is The Fall of the Seleukid Empire 187-75 BC by John D. Grainger; Pen and Sword, 2015.

The third volume was a tougher read for me than the first two, mainly because of the unremitting series of disasters it chronicles. From the time Antiochus IV (of Biblical infamy) killed his nephew and seized the throne, there began what seems to have been an endless series of pretenders and rebellions, sometimes with as many as three or four candidates for the throne slugging it out at once. The institutions unifying the kingdom were enough to hold it more or less together for roughly 100 years, but the constant corrosive effect of the complete absence of any real legitimacy ultimately doomed the state.

Grainger manages, somehow, to find what is interesting to tell about this slow-motion disaster. By painstakingly assembling the scant evidence, he manages to present a coherent chronicle of events, complete with fascinating glimpses into the character and motivation of the various participants.

This book does provide a really thorough answer to that age old wargamer's question; if the Seleukid army was really as tough as most rules make it seem on the table, why did the Kingdom fall apart? The answer, according to Grainger, is that so long as the Kingdom was able to control its main sources of money and recruits, the army remained effective. Eventually, the constant friction caused by the unremitting civil wars eroded the manpower pool and tax base beyond what was sustainable.

If you, like me, are fascinated by the Hellenistic period in general and the Seleukids in particular, I urge you to get ahold of this series (The Rise of the Seleukid Empire and The Seleukid Empire of Antiochos III are the other 2 volumes) as soon as you can. These books are far superior to what we wargamers usually get from our specialty presses like Pen and Sword. This is not another book written by an intelligent, well read amateur. Grainger is the real thing; a scholarly, erudite writer who dumbs nothing down, gives you all the evidence and detail, yet writes with a wonderful clarity that even ignoramuses like your humble servant can understand. Again, I cannot recommend this series highly enough. It is magnificent

The third book in a trilogy

The book is the third in a series that covers the Seleucid Empire. I mention this because the author assumes knowledge of the rise of the empire and its most important leader Antichus III, and does not provide much information on these subjects, assuming that the reader has read the two proceeding books in the series. I did not read these books, as I was already familiar with this material; however, I feel that this book would have benefited greatly from a short (10-20 pages) prologue to bring the reader up to speed. I definitely do not recommend this book to someone who is not familiar with the rise of Seleucid Empire and Antichus III. (Note - the author does not use the typical Latin based transliteration from the Greek, using the letter k instead of c as is used in most other books, and os instead of us, but I am using the spelling of Seleucid rather than Seleuckid and Antichus rather than the author’s spelling Antichos as this conforms to the more common usage.)

The book begins in 187 BC, with the reign of Seleucus IV, followed by Antichus IV (the Antichus of the bible). It contains two maps and a chronology of the kings of the Seleucid Empire, starting with Antichus III. The book is well written and is replete with details about numerous battles and dynastic wars that led to the ultimate fall of the empire. The book paints a vivid picture of how and why the empire fell, showing the influence of how these dynastic struggles, and struggles with Ptolemaic Egypt, sapped the empire’s strength, allowing it to fall the Romans and the Parthians. I recommend it to anyone with the aforementioned background knowledge on the rise of the empire and the empire at its peak.
