About the Author

Philip Kotler is one of the world’s leading authorities on marketing. He is the S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He received his master’s degree at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. at MIT, both in economics. He did postdoctoral work in mathematics at Harvard University and in behavioral science at the University of Chicago.

 

Dr. Kotler is the coauthor of Principles of Marketing and Marketing: An Introduction. His Strategic Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations, now in its seventh edition, is the best seller in that specialized area. Professor Kotler was the first recipient of the American Marketing Association’s (AMA) Distinguished Marketing Educator Award (1985). The European Association of Marketing Consultants and Sales Trainers awarded him their Prize for Marketing Excellence. He was chosen as the Leader in Marketing Thought by the Academic Members of the AMA in a 1975 survey. He also received the 1978 Paul Converse Award of the AMA, honoring his original contribution to marketing. In 1995, the Sales and Marketing Executives International (SMEI) named him Marketer of the Year. In 2002, Professor Kotler received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. In 2013, he received the William L. Wilkie “Marketing for a Better World” Award and subsequently received the Sheth Foundation Medal for Exceptional Contribution to Marketing Scholarship and Practice.In 2014, he was inducted in the Marketing Hall of Fame.

 

He has received honorary doctoral degrees from Stockholm University, the University of Zurich, Athens University of Economics and Business, DePaul University, the Cracow School of Business and Economics, Groupe H.E.C. in Paris, the Budapest School of Economic Science and Public Administration, the University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, and Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics.

Professor Kotler has been a consultant to many major U.S. and foreign companies, including IBM, General Electric, AT&T, Honeywell, Bank of America, Merck, SAS Airlines, Michelin, and others in the areas of marketing strategy and planning, marketing organization, and international marketing.

He has been Chairman of the College of Marketing of the Institute of Management Sciences, a Director of the American Marketing Association, a Trustee of the Marketing Science Institute, a Director of the MAC Group, a member of the Yankelovich Advisory Board, and a member of the Copernicus Advisory Board. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a member of the Advisory Board of the Drucker Foundation. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and South America, advising and lecturing to many companies about global marketing opportunities.

 

Kevin Lane Keller is the E. B. Osborn Professor of Marketing at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Professor Keller has degrees from Cornell, Carnegie-Mellon, and Duke universities. At Dartmouth, he teaches MBA courses on marketing management and strategic brand management and lectures in executive programs on those topics.

 

Previously, Professor Keller was on the faculty at Stanford University, where he also served as the head of the marketing group. Additionally, he has been on the faculty at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been a visiting professor at Duke University and the Australian Graduate School of Management, and has two years of industry experience as Marketing Consultant for Bank of America.

 

Professor Keller's general area of expertise lies in marketing strategy and planning and branding. His specific research interest is in how understanding theories and concepts related to consumer behavior can improve marketing strategies. His research has been published in three of the major marketing journals: the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, and the Journal of Consumer Research. He also has served on the Editorial Review Boards of those journals. With more than 90 published papers, his research has been widely cited and has received numerous awards.

 

Actively involved with industry, he has worked on a host of different types of marketing projects. He has served as a consultant and advisor to marketers for some of the world’s most successful brands, including Accenture, American Express, Disney, Ford, Intel, Levi Strauss, Procter & Gamble, and Samsung. Additional brand consulting activities have been with other top companies such as Allstate, Beiersdorf (Nivea), BlueCross BlueShield, Campbell, Colgate, Eli Lilly, ExxonMobil, General Mills, GfK, Goodyear, Hasbro, Intuit, Johnson & Johnson, Kodak, L.L.Bean, Mayo Clinic, MTV, Nordstrom, Ocean Spray, Red Hat, SAB Miller, Shell Oil, Starbucks, Unilever, and Young & Rubicam. He has also served as an academic trustee for the Marketing Science Institute and is serving as their Executive Director from July 1, 2013, to July 1, 2015.

 

A popular and highly sought-after speaker, he has made speeches and conducted marketing seminars to top executives in a variety of forums. Some of his senior management and marketing training clients have included include such diverse business organizations as Cisco, Coca-Cola, Deutsche Telekom, ExxonMobil, GE, Google, IBM, Macy’s, Microsoft, Nestle, Novartis, Pepsico, SC Johnson and Wyeth. He has lectured all over the world, from Seoul to Johannesburg, from Sydney to Stockholm, and from Sao Paulo to Mumbai. He has served as keynote speaker at conferences with hundreds to thousands of participants.

 

Professor Keller is currently conducting a variety of studies that address strategies to build, measure, and manage brand equity. His textbook on those subjects, Strategic Brand Management, in its fourth edition, has been adopted at top business schools and leading firms around the world and has been heralded as the “bible of branding.”

 

An avid sports, music, and film enthusiast, in his so-called spare time, he has helped to manage and market, as well as serve as executive producer for, one of Australia’s great rock-and-roll treasures, The Church, as well as American power-pop legends Tommy Keene and Dwight Twilley. He also serves on the Board of Directors for The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, the Lebanon Opera House, and the Montshire Museum of Science. An EXCELLENT alternative to the hard cover

I purchased this book as a cheaper option to the hard cover. The information inside was identical and I was able to complete the assignments and follow along in class. I find paperback books easier to carry to and from class, so this was a great option for me. The pictures are in color, and the print is more than large enough to read. The paper quality is nice, and it is not too thin or brittle. I used this book for approximately 12 weeks during the summer semester of 2016 and it did not wear and tear. It was also easy to put post-its with notes inside and highlighter did not smear across the page. This is a very well written book and contains a great deal of relevant information about marketing. It is a good high level view for someone who has not been exposed to the field before. The index is separated into different sections including name, company, brand and organization. I found this especially helpful when I was writing essays assigned by my professor. There is also a very comprehensive glossary and easily searchable Table of Contents and includes a "Brief Contents" and "Contents" section that provided either a quick view of the pages or something more in depth depending on what you needed. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the marketing field.

I rented this book for an MBA class I took ...

I rented this book for an MBA class I took in this Spring. I have to say that this book is really well-written and engaging (something that can be difficult to find in a textbook). The chapters in the book tended to be very long, but since the content and voice was interesting, I did not mind. What was also helpful were the real-life company examples spread throughout the entire book.

Does the job

I purchased this as a required textbook for a Strategic Marketing course. In that regards it's perfect in that I have assigned readings from it, each week. It is not at all inspiring, dry in places, and some of the examples could be updated. For instance, their example regarding Apple is a great description of the company's brand associations and positioning of 10 years ago (the book still refers to them as Apple Computer) and makes no mention of any of the brand development that firm has undergone since. That said, it get's the concepts across, but I think if it hadn't been written a as a college textbook (in accocordance with a textbook publisher's business model) the information could have been transferred more effectively and inspiringly - in probably half to two thirds of the pages. I think the idea is if it weighs more, it must be worth more.

Awesome book! Buy it

Buy this book before any other Thermo books.The best introductory book on Thermodynamics.

I have recently read Thermo for Dummies and it is probably the best thermo introductory text out there. Dummies is only 339 pages and a very readable explanation of thermo. The examples are very good, practical and clear. For an under grad who has no intro to thermo buy this book hand down.This book will take from being a Dummy to top of your class. Bravo, Professor Pauken well done.

Pauken lacks practice problems but is very clear and readable and the examples more than make up for the lack of problems. I would by Schaum's or equal for the problems and this one for the explanation of thermo.

I also like CRC's Thermo book by Ka Fu Wong. It is more geared for the practicing engineer but an under grad would have little problem understanding it.

I have also read Cengal and Morans books are very good and readable but long.

As an undergrad I was tortured with Von Wheelan and Sontag in a wash out class. It turned so many young engineers off to Thermo which is shame for the United States. We need every new engineer we can turn out. This book should help turn the tide.

Again Bravo, Prof Pauken a great book.

Thermodynamics for Dummies

I found this book very helpful. I need to read certain thermodynamic facts that other people would think don't need to be stated because they're too obvious. This books states the obvious, and because of this, I was able to understand the subject better. For instance, in thermodynamics, they discuss heat engines. I never made the connection that the engine in my car is a heat engine. I figured the spak plug ignites the fuel/air mixture and that pushes the piston down, I didn't understand how it's a heat engine. This book explains that the spark plug ignighting the fuel/air mixture is the heat in (Qin) part of the cycle and that it's a heat engine. Now I understand.

I also didn't understand how air-conditioning works, now I do.

I didn't understand what enthalpy was, now I do.

I didn't understand how to use entropy, now I do.

I'm still trying to understand the difference between a gas and a vapor, but this book has helped in that regard too.

The book takes you through much of what I was supposed to learn in a first semester Thermodynamics class and just was not clearly explained. I wish I had had it then. With this book, some basic Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, and such you can go a long way toward getting that engineering degree you always wanted.

Dada art was not a nihilistic negation of culture, contends French art historian Dachy. Rather, the movement's provocation and humor were an affirmation of new freedoms as dadaists liberated materials (object-sculptures, pasted papers), words (automatic writing), language (concrete poems, free prose, sound poems) and brought an anticonventional spirit to photography, filmmaking, typography, collage and book design. Dazzlingly illustrated with 120 color reproductions and some 200 black-and-white photographs, this sweeping chronicle follows Dada from its utopian phase when Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp and Francis Picabia espoused a constructive vision, through its rejection of the idea of progress and its turn to pure vocal and visual gestures as a way of deconstructing socially given behaviors, personas and ideas. Artists as far apart as Russia, New York, Holland, Spain and Germany carried forward the original Dada impulse that stunned Zurich in 1916. Dachy's text is a real scholarly compilation on the artists, manifestoes, and publications of an intriguing, and often hard-to-describe, rebellion. The result is a collective redefinition of the Dada movement. The chronology, bibliography, and index are superb entry points and are aided by high-quality illustrations. However, the extremely academic focus of this work may well put off the general reader. Serge Lemoine's Dada (Universe, 1987) and John Erickson's Dada: Performance, Poetry, and Art (G.K. Hall, 1984) offer more digestible insights on Dada and its impact on subsequent art. Nevertheless, Dachy's monograph is essential for academic and museum libraries covering the Dada movement. Every key aspect of Dada philosophy appears here, accompanied by relevant artist and text citations.

The best general work on Dada - reissue it NOW!

An excellent, comprehensive overview of the Dada movement, extending well beyond the dates in the title! Although the translated text is occasionally a bit clunky, it is quite readable and informative - and even without it, the extensive collection of photos and high-quality reproductions of key Dada art pieces would make this book an important reference work on their own...a shame it is currently unavailable! One hopes this problem will soon be rectified.

Must for all parents

This book is so helpful. A rich resource for ALL parents. It's even better if you connect with the Empowered to Connect April simulcast and see videos and get tips/strategies to implement the concepts. Children do better when you are aware that their behavior (good or bad) reflects their needs, and often the adults around them need to be aware and help the child meet those needs if they need the child to make a change in their choices. This book helps adults process how to approach and interact with children while identifying their needs, addressing the fear or safety need, or the physical need (hunger, thirst, exhaustion) or the emotional need (broken, alone, scared, sad, mad, angry) and helping the child gain skill in appropriate reactions or behaviors. It takes a lot of processing and practice, but so worth it. There are also videos online that help make the concepts come alive.

A Must-Read Parenting Book!

I don't often rave about parenting books because everybody has their own style of parenting and every kid is different. There is a reason there are thousands of parenting books on the market. However, this one stands alone! I only got this because it was required reading for our adoption agency, but I am SO glad it was.

Though there are times when I wished the author had gone into greater detail (especially on the nutrition chapter), this book does a great job of providing parents with MANY tools that I feel every parent can benefit from. It is geared toward adopted/abused children, but I really felt like it pertained a lot about my biological children as well. This book can give you a sense of control especially with stubborn, strong-willed children. I speak from experience. I don't know which is more helpful, the tools offered by this book or the sense of having options. I don't think you can go wrong with this book!

Highly Recommended to Me - and I Recommend to You

This book was recommended to me by my adoption caseworker and by other adoptive moms in a public forum. I strongly recommend it! We are about to adopt siblings and, even though they don't have any current behavior concerns like hoarding or RAD, this book has still been helpful in parenting any children who have experienced trauma. The book has lots of examples and lots of specific ways to help connect and support your children. I'm about halfway through the book now (I read half and then re-read half with a pencil, making notes and underling parts I wanted to remember) and the chapters on "Felt Safety" and "Teaching Life Values" have been the most helpful so far - well, that our struggles are not ours alone - others have had them and many have surpassed them. Karyn Purvis is an expert in the field - and after reading this book, I understand why her name is so well known. Her work is realistic, down to earth, and filled with hope. If you are adopting or work with foster or adopted children, this is a great read.

The book's main points are:
- The key is to treat the whole child - and we'll help you do that!
- Start where your child is
- Compassion is key
- Focus on nurturing and structure / connecting and correcting
- "At-risk youngsters are capable of making tremendous strides toward overcoming early hardships and limitations."

About the Author

Shearer West is Professor of Art History at the University of Birmingham. Her books include Chagall (Bison, 1990), The Image of the Actor: Verbal and Visual Representation in the Age of Garrick and Kemble (Pinter, 1991), The Visual Arts in Germany 1890-1940 (Manchester UP, 2000), and Fin de Sie'cle: Art and Society in an Age of Uncertainty (Overlook, 1993). She is also the editor of The Bloomsbury Guide to Art (Bloomsbury, 1996).

Brilliant and fascinating book

If you are an art lover, connoisseur, art history student, fashion designer, or someone who wants to explore the mysterious world of portraiture this book is an excellent choice. The author assumed the difficult task of providing a clear, comprehensive overview of the history of portraits and portraiture from the ancient world, through the Renaissance to modern art.

I would give this book the best rating possible. You ask why? The answer is simple. As an art lover, I am particularly interested in the evolution of portraits and portraiture of the Renaissance and Baroque and this book covers the whole range of my interest and beyond. In this lavishly illustrated book the author, Shearer West, explains why the portrait as a work of art occupies the central position in art history, gives easy to remember definitions of portraits and portraiture, and studies the diversity of portrait forms and functions. She discusses in-depth how portraiture changed and developed over the centuries and paints a unique, intriguing relationship of artist, sitters, patron/s and viewer. She also reveals who and why commissioned the portraits and how a portrait can reflect and represent the social status of the sitter (rich or poor, powerful or subjugated, professional or servant) in different historical periods. The history of portraiture could not be completed without a broad-range of methods and tricks, sometimes very funny, used by artists to present themselves to the publicity. Her investigation of the complexities of contemporary ortraiture, of the 1950's onwards, is clear and convincing. This fascinating book is enriched with 146 high quality illustrations with well written, highly informative commentary to each painting.

Academic Overview

This is an excellent survey of portrait art from ancient to modern times with a great bibliography, lots of references, and good illustrations. I appreciated the historic timeline and a list of websites for further research.
I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in portraiture. As a portrait artist I thoroughly enjoyed it. For some reason, art historians have largely ignored portraiture as a field of research.
My only criticism is that I found the book a bit dry, lacking creative insight and humor. The emphasis on painting, at the expense of drawing and sculpture is also a notable shortcoming.

The next time that I teach portrait painting, I will require that students purchase this book. It is a good overview, providing general themes as well as specific examples. An early chapter on the functions of portraiture, for instance, covers the full breadth of what a portrait can be or mean, and underscores that a portrait is much more than a likeness.
