About the Author

Rebecca Hamilton is a special correspondent for The Washington Post in Sudan with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and a fellow at the New America Foundation. In 2007 she was selected as a Global Young Leader on genocide Prevention for spearheading the campaign for Harvard University to divest from companies doing business with Sudan and working with internally displaced populations in Sudan. She worked for the prosecution at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, including work on their historic Darfur cases. Currently a resident of New York, Hamilton is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School, as a former Open Society fellow.

An insider review of the successes and failures of responding to Darfur

This is a book about the popular movement in support of Darfur, and as such is pertinent to all those who marched in a rallies, wrote letters to their representatives, formed clubs or in other ways advocated around issues of Darfur, human rights, prevention of genocide or promotion of peace. The book is a very accessible read, rather than an dense academic study such as the works of Alex De Waal. It takes a hard look at the rapid if at times chaotic creation of a mass advocacy movement to address what the US government had determined to be genocide, a movement which despite achieving impressive ability to persuade Congress was unsuccessful at helping to end the conflict which inspired it.

The history of the development of the movement and of events in Sudan is well told. One of Hamilton's strengths was clearly her access to political decision makers in the US, the UN and in Sudan. The book is very good at bringing out the individuals in historical events, such as the description of how Colin Powell made the genocide call, or President Bush's agreement to refer Sudan to the International Criminal Court.

There are a lot of tough subjects in the book for advocacy campaigners to mull over. One such challenge is how to sustain a mass movement which is not able to absorb detailed information about evolving events. Another subject is the costs and benefits of the international court's indictment of President Bashir, an issue referred to as justice vs. peace. Coming from a humanitarian background myself I have long thought that humanitarian costs should be added to this list.

The book points out that as a shiny new organization, one of the biggest flaws of the Save Darfur movement was its lack understanding of Sudanese politics. Its Darfur-specific approach ignored the many years of work by the US government and US NGOs in South Sudan, an area to which the pendulum of political and public interest swung back to with the independence vote. In her summary Hamilton suggests that a more unified one-Sudan approach may have enabled US policy makers to achieve results at a national level. Unfortunately this is going to remain one of the untested theories of history.

A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT THE DARFUR/SUDAN CRISIS

In Fighting for Darfur, author Bec Hamilton, combines inquisition and an investigative eye for complexities of the Darfur crisis in Sudan. With exemplary clarity and thoroughness, Ms. Hamilton offers an incisive historical account and examination of the genocidal crisis in Darfur and the causes and effects of the crisis. This is a remarkably comprehensive engagement and a timely call on our conscience to better understand how we can deal with ethnic conflicts, genocide, and policy choices that have resulted in devastating catastrophe. Ms. Hamilton's exclusive interviews are quite revealing and provocative as she tackles the and debates the issues of nationalism, governance, food security; while placing those debates by theorizing about Sudan's future in lieu of its past and present. I have read several books about the Sudan and I covered the region quite a bit as a journalist in the 1990s. This text is one of the most successful contribution to the literature and it shows Hamilton's great adaptability and versatility in covering the region and country as special correspondent for major national media and think tanks.

The limits of advocacy

Having time and energy over the past years organizing support for various causes (some successful, some much less so) I am intrigued with Rebecca Hamilton’s experience and her analysis of it in "Fighting for Darfur".

Regarding her use of the term "genocide", naming is essential to disseminating one’s views about something. If one gets there first and is able to create or control the name it can be very powerful. For example, if one calls the conflict in Darfur genocide inflicted by the regime in Khartoum then not opposing Khartoum makes one implicit in genocide. Organized, large scale slaughter of civilians, while horrifying and immoral, may not call for military intervention that could result in more death and greater destruction. Genocide will always come under the doctrine of Responsibility to Protect (R2P) so what we call it is important.

Years ago we used a lot of loaded terms, almost always inaccurately–fascism was the genocide of the day–and in doing so weakened the authority we had developed through organizing. Hamilton is an indefatigable advocate and a good organizer but the "Save Darfur" movement showed how limited first world political organizing can be in trying to deal with Third/Developing world issues.

About the Author
Mike Mullin first discovered he could make money writing in sixth grade. His teacher, Mrs. Brannon, occasionally paid students for using unusual words. Mullin’s first sale as a writer earned ten cents for one word: tenacious. Since then, Mullin has always been involved with literature. One of his early jobs was shelving books at Central Library in Indianapolis. Later, he paid his way through graduate school in part by serving as a reference assistant. He has worked in his mother’s business, Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, for more than twenty years, serving at various times as a store manager, buyer, school and library salesperson, and marketing consultant. Mullin wrote his first novel in elementary school — Captain Poopy’s Sewer Adventures. He’s been writing more or less nonstop ever since, but fortunately for his readers, Ashfall will be his first published novel. Mullin holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. Live To Read

First off, don’t read this book if you haven’t read Ashfall. I was very confused and had to track down and read the first (which was awesome). In the second book, Ashen Winter, we see Alex and Darla six months after the first book ended. My biggest enjoyment out of this whole book was seeing their relationship grow. Both Alex and Darla are compatible and I really connect with the love they have for each other. If you see all my other reviews, my stars are mostly based on how well I liked the characters. If the plot is bad, but I like the people in them, I keep reading. The plot in this book was very interesting and had me rapidly turning the pages. I loved how the invested the characters were in each other-when Darla is taken, Alex is determined to get her back no matter the cost!

My feelings were invested in all their decision making. The pacing was fast and action packed! I was glued to every page, nothing was slow or left me bored. It was seriously like BAM! This happened BAM! That happened, BAM! Twists and turns were everywhere... this is a book I couldn’t put down, which hasn’t happened to me in a while. If you’re looking for thrills, action, romance and suspense all packed into one book, this book is for you!

More Talking, Less Action Than the First Book

I really enjoyed the first book, Ashfall, and was very excited to see where the story would take me. While there is still a good read in the book, it was overflowing with time spent on the small things, minute by minute, tiny detail after tiny detail. I felt myself wanting to speed read through these parts, but it was most of the book. Looking back, I think if I would have just read the dialogue and the small bits surrounding it, I would have had the same story with less distraction.

Problem after problem arises and while they are written as grand issues, they don't feel that big because there are so many of them. Some of the characters that we meet are annoying and I just wanted Alex to move on so I didn't have to read about them anymore.

The good parts were when the big things were actually happening. Wondering what would happen next with those moments kept me reading and interested. It still scares me when I think about something like this happening in our future, because I think the way people will behave will be quite similar to the world that Mullin has created. For that alone he is a wonderful writer, pulling the possible from the unthinkable.

I have to disagree with the majority; I was disappointed by this book. Ashfall was so well done that I had high expectations from the author. It felt like the main character did one stupid thing after another just to keep him in constant crisis which got old very quickly and felt contrived. By the end, I didn't care what happened to Alex but I would have liked to read more about Ben.

Gr 1–4—While walking home from school along the Maine coast, Sally and her two brothers see a beached whale. With the tide ebbing, they rush to wet down the animal's tail and fins. After Josh runs to summon help, adult volunteers and Coast Guard members arrive. Efforts to move the whale prove futile. As Sally talks to it, the animal lets out "a huge sigh like the wind off the ocean" and dies. When a Coast Guard man present medals to the children, Sally expresses the irony to herself. "So, the whale died and we were heroes." Yolen masterfully conveys both the urgency of Sally's rush to save the whale and her anger and sorrow at its death. An author's note explains her decision to set the story in 1971, when lack of cell phones would delay the arrival of both helpers and broadcasters. She also discusses possible reasons for beachings, which usually end with the whale's death. Cataldo's paintings employ the grays, steel blues, and browns of a northern coastline. Clothing colors are also muted, and daylight gives way to evening, adding to the low-key and pensive mood. VERDICT This poignant story reminds readers that despite human efforts, not all living beings can be saved and honestly portrays the frustration and sadness that can result. Jane Yolen is the acclaimed author of more than three hundred books for children and young adults, including the Caldecott Medal–winning Owl Moon and the best-selling How Do Dinosaurs series. She lives in Massachusetts and Scotland.

Realistic whale rescue story...

A touching tale about some children who launch a rescue effort of a beached whale. What sets this book apart is that it DOES NOT have a happy ending but that makes it very realistic. I live on Monterey Bay where we have many whale rescues and not all are successful! Perhaps not for young, impressionable children but fine for nine or ten year olds. Nice job Jane Yolen!

Thar she blows!

I enjoy some young-adult novels, but it’s rare that I -- my youngest child is 17 -- will go out and buy an illustrated children’s book. An exception to that statement is any book penned by Jane Yolen, who has written so many good books for adults, young adults and children that I would never hesitate to curl up with her latest to read.

This one is special, because it deals with one of my favorite topics: whales. And, as Yolen is an honest sort, she doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of the central leviathan in this tale.

“Stranded Whale” is obliquely about a massive sperm whale that beaches itself on a remote Maine beach in 1971. It is more directly about the three school-age siblings who find the helpless animal and do what they can -- all well-intentioned but ultimately fruitless efforts -- to save it.

This story is not a feel-good yarn, nor should you expect a happy ending. It touches briefly but deeply on the emotional impact a creature in peril can have on a person, no matter how fleeting their interaction.

Illustrations by Melanie Cataldo suit the story neatly, with muted colors and a slight graininess to the art that reminds me of classic children’s books from my youth.

~~ A lesson in caring and doing our best despite the odds ~~

Death happens but knowing we did everything we can to help prevent it, can help us in our grieving. In this story, three siblings are walking home from school across a beach in Maine. It is September of 1971 so way before the age of the modern cell phone. Suddenly the girl spots the beached whale. She immediately runs to the ocean, soaks her sweater in the outgoing tide and takes it to the whale. One of her brothers runs for the telephone a half mile away. Obviously one small sweater is not going to be much help but others come to her aid also and do what they can. Sadly the whale doesn't make it.

Sad story? Yes! HOWEVER the kids are awarded medals for doing their best and for knowing not to cover the whale's blowhole. The pictures are beautiful and the writing well done. At the end of the story the author gives the reader further insight into the number of beachings there are each year and some of the reasons they happen. This actually helps explain more of why the whale died so very helpful. Facing death is part of life and this story may well help children process their own grief. Thanks, Liz

Riley Weber is an author and artist who would rather write books than eat candy.
