Looks good, kind of small

I bought both Spanish I and II for grades K-5 for my 9 year old. We haven't used them yet, but I did look through them.

The good:
They cover a good amount of vocabulary
They aren't overwhelming, each page only has about 5-8 vocab words on it.
The pictures are colorful but not cheesy and cartoon-like (I hate that for kids older than about 5-6)
Seem very nice for the price.

The not-so-good (I won't go as far as saying "bad"):
The books are kind of slim and small. They are both only 80 pages including the table of contents and answer key, and measure about 6"x9", smaller than most workbooks. Still, I think they cover a lot.
They do not introduce much in the way of actually SPEAKING Spanish. Verbs and common phrases are not included in the lessons, aside from a small amount in the instructions (which are translated). You will definitely want to purchase something to supplement these to teach verbs and common phrases.

Spanish I contains vocab for: Town Square, Alphabet, Numbers (1-20), Colors, Days of the Week, Seasons of the Year, Weather, Animals, The Body, Clothing, Sports, Family, The House, Household Items, Food, At the Table, At School, The Classroom, Helpers in the Community, Professions, Transportation.

Spanish II contains: Numbers (1-40), Calendar, At the Supermarket, Fruits, Vegetables, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Health, Accessories, Household Items, Tools and Materials, Communication, Activities, In the City, At the Bank, In the country, Wild Animals, Nature.

One additional note: I think K-5 is an accurate grade level expectation, but for pre-readers and pre-writers, you will obviously have to work through it together and practice together. Older children could do much of it independently though.

Glorified vocabulary list

This book is well-suited to students aged 2nd-3rd grade. Everything in it is useful, easy to do, well-explained, and has many colorful, engaging pictures. HOWEVER... it is pretty much just a glorified vocabulary list. There are a FEW activities that take it beyond that but NOT many. I would LOVE to see this with twice as many pages, with more things for the student to actually read and DO, rather than just copying vocabulary words. It's an adequate book, but certainly will not teach a child Spanish without lots of further instruction.

Great choice for a simple Spanish curricula for kids!

This Spanish curricula is perfect for the younger crowd to learn basic conversational Spanish. Our 7 year old flew through this in our homeschool this year an was asking for the next booklet in a short time. Very simply laid out and a great option at a perfect price for homeschool families, or even those who simply want to add more to their kids education.

I wish more books were like this one.

A wonderfully straight -forward how-to book on the technicalities and the various methods of binding books. Concentrates exclusively on stitching, introducing many methods unfamiliar to me that are both beautiful and practical. The instructions and drawings are clear uncluttered and easy to follow. The photo's are basic but intended to inform rather than the seduce the unaware into a purchase. It contained everything I needed to know. I wish more books were like this one.

Great book!!

My boss bought a copy of this book for the graphics department (an old edition). I read a few paragraphs and flipped through the pages for a few minutes, then got on Amazon and ordered my own copy. The book would make a fantastic text book for a book making class. It goes into great detail, yet allows for creativity. I'd recommend it highly.

Excellent resource for book artists

I enjoy journaling on blank pages and subsequently binding them into journals. Keith Smith's book on non-adhesive binding is an excellent resource for learning non-conventional binding and book structures.

I enjoyed the book so much, I eventually made mock-ups of nearly every project in this book AND went on to worth through several other of Smith's books.

Smith provides many basic/general techniques in the front of the book followed by specific "recipes." He provides both creative suggestions for content and technical information on structure and assembly. Smith also provides sample photographs of each binding.

One minor criticism: many of the projects suggest using very heavyweight paper--almost watercolor paper--instead of textweight or lightweight. I had to tweak the instructions for binding the lightweight paper I use for journaling.

About the Author
Karen Wilken Braun is an associate professor for the Weatherhead School of Management
at Case Western Reserve University. Professor Braun was on the faculty of the
J.M. Tull School of Accounting at the University of Georgia before her appointment at
Case Western. She has received several student-nominated Outstanding Teacher of the
Year awards at both business schools.

Professor Braun has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1985 and holds membership
in the American Accounting Association (AAA), the Institute of Management
Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She also holds
the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation, and is a member of the
AAA’s Management Accounting Section as well as the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum
Section. Her research and teaching interests revolve around lean operations,
sustainability, corporate responsibility, and accounting education. Dr. Braun’s work has
been published in Contemporary Accounting Research, Issues in Accounting Education,
and Journal of Accounting Education.

Dr. Braun received her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, where she was an
AICPA Doctoral Fellow, a Deloitte & Touche Doctoral Fellow, and an AAA Doctoral
Consortium Fellow. She received her B.A., summa cum laude, from Luther College,
where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Braun gained public accounting experience
while working at Arthur Andersen & Co. and accumulated additional business
and management accounting experience as a corporate controller.

Wendy M. Tietz is an associate professor for the Department of Accounting in the
College of Business Administration at Kent State University, where she has taught since
2000. Prior to Kent State University, she was on the faculty at the University of Akron.
She teaches in a variety of formats, including large sections, small sections, and webbased
sections. She has received numerous college and university teaching awards while
at Kent State University. Most recently she was named the Beta Gamma Sigma Professor
of the Year for the College of Business Administration at Kent State University.
Dr. Tietz is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant,
and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. She is a member of the American Accounting
Association (AAA), the Institute of Management Accountants and the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She has published in Issues in Accounting
Education, Accounting Education: An International Journal, and Journal of Accounting
& Public Policy. She regularly presents at AAA regional and national meetings. She
also leads a short-term Study Abroad trip for accounting majors to Paris and London
each year.

Dr. Tietz received her Ph.D. from Kent State University. She received both her
M.B.A. and B.S.A. from the University of Akron. She worked in industry for several
years, both as a controller for a financial institution and as the operations manager and
controller for a recycled plastics manufacturer.

Dr. Tietz and her husband, Russ, have two grown sons. In her spare time, she enjoys
bike riding, walking, and reading. She is also very interested in using technology
in education.

Recently Re-issued Sufi Material

I'm glad Octagon Press has re-issued THE WORLD OF THE SUFI, because my copy is the original 1979 hardback, and it is disintigrating from overuse.

I heard one of the authors, the late Peter Brent, when he lectured once at Arizona State University. And I have become personally acquainted here in Colorado with another contributer, Leonard Lewin, whose essay is actually a review of another fasinating book, SUFI STUDIES: EAST AND WEST. Brent and others have their own books on the market, and I've read two of his, plus some by other essayists in THE WORLD OF THE SUFI: David Penlebury, Doris Lessing, and Arthur Deikman, all intensely interesting.

That's the way many Sufi books work. One is led into labirynths of people, ideas and practices. Reading THE WORLD OF THE SUFI is intrinsically a spiritual exercise and more. One becomes more informed about this world and the "other" and with a piqued curiosity.

This is a fascinating book, with contributions by many outstanding thinkers including Peter Brent and Doris Lessing. Starting with an instructive introduction by Idries Shah, it's a real smorgasbord of unusual and entertaining information, with everything from humorous Mulla Nasrudin tales, to an essay on the Sufi influence on the formation of Sikhism. Sections deal with the Classical Tradition of the Sufi, Humour and the Sufi, Sufism in Eastern Religion, Therapy and the Sufi, The Practice of the Sufi, and Current Study Materials. A must read for anyone interested in the Sufis.

Many pieces in this book first appeared in pamphlet form from Octagon Press and one I find intriguing is the piece by Chatelherault on the use of the book, The Five Gems. In appearance it is a book of spells and mantrams but Chatelherault asserts it is used as a textbook by those who are not in any way occultists. He refers to the shock value in experiencing its teaching use. He gives four reasons for The Five Gems, being in a “magical disguise” (the author of the Five Gems is Gwath Shattar): - People protect and distribute magical texts; to test and to baffle the inept; as a “magician” the teacher courts no high repute; and a demonstration – when understood - that truth can be put in any form. I wonder about similar aspects in Shah's writings. At all events, a great book.

This is a rich book woven with many unexpected strands: gorgeous new photos and historic images; hidden places around the city alongside fresh insights on the familiar ones; maps and background pieces, along with captions and essays. It ambitiously considers both architecture and landscape, not simply as two related topics but as proof of the thesis that architecture and landscape uniquely merged in nineteenth-century Chicago. That merger is a dynamic process, and Chappell is unafraid to make contemporary observations. Note to Chicago's Olympic Committee: Here is Exhibit A for Chicago's status as a global city with long experience in welcoming the world. Even back in the 1980s, "I found members of nineteen different ethnic groups occupying a single acre [of Lincoln Park] on a warm summer day. When presenting my findings, I claimed that Lincoln Park had the greatest ethnic diversity of any park in Chicago. My colleague, Kenneth Fidel, a sociologist, later told me I had understated my case; I should have said 'in the world.'"

The Joan Miró Foundation opened in 1975, becoming Barcelona's first public institution to focus entirely on contemporary art. To design the foundation's home, he tapped his old friend Sert, a pioneer in the introduction of modern architecture in Catalonia, who had first met Miró in 1932 and worked with him on the Spanish (Republican) Pavilion at the Paris World Fair in 1937. This volume, one of a series of monographs on new museum architecture, provides a careful look at the design of one of Europe's premier art institutions, and includes an interview with the architects responsible for the recent expansions.
