Ignore the negative and uninformed bashers of tax liens

The 16% Solution is an excellent book to help you get started investing in a very powerful and safe investment.
True it was written back in the 90's, but things really haven't changed all that much. And yes it is true that institutions are in on tax liens, but the real truth is that these were and are and always have been the primary players. I suspect the negative reviews are from banks and other institutions who do not want you to know about these outstanding investments.
The rate of return is not cut in stone. While you are not guaranteed 16%, in some states and in many cases you can earn 50%...even today.
I invest in tax liens and especially over the last three years, have far outperformed the stock market and other forms of investment. I have also picked up houses for pennies on the dollar via tax liens. Remember, a tax lien is superior to all other liens, even IRS liens.
As I said, I invest in tax liens and the USA is a huge market place. I don't feel that letting you know what a great investment tax liens are is going to hurt my business. And no, I do not have any courses or books to sell. Nor am I in any way associated with this author or any other author or seminar promoter. I just believe in these investments based on my own experience and hate to see potential investors scared away from a very powerful and lucrative investment because of one malcontent who is only trying to push a dead website which does have books and seminars to sell.
I guess I am old fashioned that way.
The 16% Solution is an outstanding book and I highly recommend it.

Tax liens - lucrative and fun

Although there is no investment that is completely safe, tax liens come as close as possible. Why? Because your profits are is guaranteed by the US government and secured by real estate.
Tax liens used to be a secret known only by insiders and savvy investors. The word is getting out. Books like the 16% Solution are getting the word out and a lot of investors are not too happy with that.
You can earn from 5% in states like Louisiana to 50% in states like Michigan.
Caution: Don't buy into the false hopes perpetrated on late night tv and try to use Tax Liens as a get rich quick scheme. Like any other investment, it's a process and you have to know what you are doing. 16% Solution is a good start.
It used to be that you had to buy tax liens only through auctions. Now you can buy tax liens through the mail and even on the internet.
I recommend the 16% Solution as a excellent book to help you get started in investing in tax liens.

Nice, safe returns--good book.

I thought that this was an excellent book and an effective way to tap into the world of tax liens. Better than paying $200-$300 or more for book tape programs. Tax liens are a excellent strategy for those who want big rates of return but also want something safer than the stock market. I also suggest More Wealth without Risk by Charles Givens.

An interesting quote book for those who do not believe in a supreme being or in the Easter Bunny or tooth fairy.

I have been a questioning free thinker for all my adult life. Like many people I was born and raised Catholic. While serving in the U.S. Navy when I was seventeen years old, I began to study philosophy and other topics. This quickly led to the realization that the belief in a God is merely a myth spread by ignorant and uneducated people. Since that time I have read numerous authors on he subject of religion and Atheism. In my search for facts and truth, I also read the old and new testament as well as the Koran. I have never seen this book in the past but recently picked up this volume on Amazon.

I found this book (The Quotable Atheist) to be very interesting because it contains quotes from numerous sources on the subject of religion and God. The introduction did not impress me because it is clear the author is a far left atheist who obviously does not like anyone who might have some conservative views. In fact, he is also the author of "The Bush-Hater's Handbook."

I always find it absolutely fascinating that far left liberals are often willing to give up their belief in a supreme being controlling us, but fail to see that worshipping big government is no different than believing in a forgiving all powerful God. There are few things more dangerous in the real world than a far left politician who is in reality a dictator pretending to be concerned about the poor etc. just to be elected so he or she can push their socialist agenda on an ignorant public . The use of reason, logic and rationality is not the property of only far left (Socialists, Communists, National Socialists and Democrats) lunatics, but belong to anyone willing to think, reason and use the scientific method in evaluating ANY belief system.

Nevertheless, this book does have some very good intellectual ammunition for nonbelievers. This is why I gave it 4 stars.

Irreverent, Timely, and Necessary

This book is, as the sub-title implies ("Ammunition from Nonbelievers, Political Junkies, Gadflies, and Those Generally Hell-Bound"), a collection of quotes, quips, and written passages from atheists/non-believers around the world spanning from ancient history to modern day. Huberman has done a great job collecting, compiling, and presenting the quotes, but like at least one other reviewer noted, he doesn't source every quote -- his sources are, for the most part, a collection of websites referenced on the last page of the book. In spite of this minor shortcoming, however, Huberman quotes both obscure and famous figures while providing brief introductions for each one, thus adding context -- and some humor and sarcasm -- to the quotes. And Huberman doesn't limit himself only to atheists, he also includes quotes from a few god-fearing, evangelicals/Christians for good measure. To wit:
"Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions." (Jerry Falwell)
"I trust God speaks through me." (George W. Bush)
"The Supreme Court of the United States of America is an institution damned by God almighty." (Jimmy Swaggart)

The quotes from atheists/deists/non-believers range from scathing to insightful to humorous. A few of the many I highlighted:
"The splendour of human life, I feel sure, is greater to those who are not dazzled by the divine radiance." (Bertrand Russell)
"Religion is fundamentally opposed to everything I hold in veneration -- courage, clear thinking, honesty, fairness, and, above all, love of the truth." (H.L. Mencken)
"Making fun of born-again Christians is like hunting dairy cows with a high powered rifle and scope." (P.J. O'Rourke)
"The last Christian died on the cross." (Friedrich Nietzsche)
"The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy." (George Washington)
"Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company." (Mark Twain)

All in all, a good book to be enjoyed by atheists, cynics, and those otherwise disgusted with the religiosity infecting, it seems, nearly every aspect of American society.

Let's All Take the Subway

Sprightly collection of abjurations on the vexed topic of the godly in all its various shapes, sizes and impersonations. Quotes are mainly from atheists, both scholarly and wiseguy, but also include notable sayings from fence-sitting agnostics and even the aggressively pious, probably for contrast. The result is a pretty broad spectrum of source material.

The quotes are brief, so don't expect much in the way of ammunition to disabuse the Bible-belters or the Koran-thumpers. The book works best as a reference to those contemporary heretics you may not have heard of, but who have something witty, entertaining, or profound to say on the subject of pie in the sky. These include relative unknowns, like Mark Morford, Ben Mack, and Wil Forbis. There are also the classic debunkers, such as Lucretius, Twain and Ingersoll. But likely the most revealing are the celebrity heretics, outed here perhaps for the first time. For example, there's an unsurprising quote from Hugh Hefner who, of course, has no need for the nether-regions, having already located paradise on earth. Or a quote from the guilt-ridden Alfred Hitchcock on what every boy should know, or Earnest Hemingway on the "thinking man". Then again, there's the other end of the spectrum. For example, Pope Paul IV on unbelief, "If my father were a heretic, I would personally gather the wood to burn him."-- What church was that again?

It's one of those books a reader can put down and pick up without losing a beat. Sure, some of the inclusions are questionable. With hundreds of entries, that's not surprising. And author Huberman's efforts at witty asides don't always work. Still, it's a lively and informative tour of independent thought down through the ages. Sort of a Baedecker's for those of us slated for the inferno express come clock-out time.

Piercingly perceptive

Before reading this book of short stories, I knew practically nothing about Hughes, other than that he was famous for being one of the first black American writers to develop a style of writing which directly reflected the uniqueness of the Afro-American experience.
Reading this collection, however, introduced me for the first time to the mind of a truly great observer, thinker, and communicator. Hughes achieved something which is very important in the now overly politicized climate of race: he documented not only the confounding and hostile conditions which blacks had to endure in the early 20th century, but he understood the white culture as well. Through the eyes of the shrewd and empathetic Hughes, these stories read not so much as indictments of white racism as they do as the clashes of two dramatically different cultures.
To be sure, Hughes does not pull any punches when describing the hostility, condescension, and apathy of whites towards blacks during the Great Depression. These stories are glimpses into a world when overt racism was not only condoned, it was institutionalized as part of the American fabric. But despite the awful conditions for black people at the time, I never got the sense that Hughes was writing to express any personal rage or contempt for white people. He seems to present each heartbreaking scenario as an absurd juxtaposition between two disparate cultures. Instead of taking the easy road by presenting whites as evil, he makes them out to be a paranoid, anal retentive, soulless lot who don't know how to enjoy themselves. Unlike many contemporary discussions of race which tend to oversimplify the complex problems we face, Hughes's stories paint the clash between blacks and whites with deep humanity, empathy, nuance, and even humor.
Stylistically, he certainly belongs to the canon of outstanding 20th century American writers, black and white. He was no mere experimentalist (as I had previously thought), but rather a well schooled craftsman who did his homework first, and then did his own thing with it.
But aside from all my amateur literary criticm, I would like to mention that I simply could not put this book down. These stories are a gift!

Langston Gets Tough!!!!

The thing that has always bothered me about certain admirers of Langston Hughes is the way, unintentional I guess, some seem to neuter him into being a kind of "minstrel man,"nonthreating to a certain audience because he doesn't challenge them to think to much about certain subjects. THE WAYS WHITE FOLKS definitely disproves this fallacy and proved Langston Hughes could show his teeth.

Without ever standing on a soapbox to shout and point his a finger, here in this collection of short stories Hughes express a range of moods from humorous and bitingly caustic to the tragic showing the various types of ways black and white American interacted with one another during the early part of the 20th century. There is the perennial favorite "CORA UNASHAMED", dealing with a black woman's loneliness and self-awaking in a predominantly white community, SLAVE ON THE BLOCK, dealing with "liberal minded" white dilettantes, "HOME", about a sickly black man who returns home from Europe only to face brutal prejudice, "REJUVENATION THROUGH JOY", a biting satire
that may (?) have been taking a small swipe at Jean Toomer who Hughes lost much respect for after he turned his back to his people to live as white. Then there are the stories "THE BLUES I'M PLAYING" with its hints of Langston's former patron Mrs. Mason, "A GOOD JOB" and "POOR LITTLE FELLOW", all kind of showing the various choices, sacrifices, and prejudice faced in its varied degrees to just get by. And, more shorts where Hughes pretty much presents the entire skin color spectrum of the black American community while recounting in a few stories the often cruel ways these colors came to be, "RED-HEADED BABY" and "FATHER AND SON", this latter about an arrogant black son by a white southern father who refuses to acknowledge him as kin and the resulting tragic consequences. "PASSING", my lease favorite because it was very disturbing, is nevertheless truthful to the affects of racism and self-hate on the soul (e.g. just look at certain male and female actors and singers who cater to prejudiced imaginary percentage points of race for success).

Certain stories in this collection represent a time gone by in race relations in this country. But, while the situation in race relations have change quite significantly, it has not changed completely. There are stories in the WAYS OF WHITE FOLKS that still hold a relevant truth today as the first time they were made public. Still, there exist a widespread denial of the complicated blood history of the larger black American community, only a specific few within the community being allowed the privilege to acknowledge their heritage and, often out of self-hate, contributing to the prejudiced stereotypes against the larger black American community whose blood is "equally" rich and the "same" in its diversity. Still, there exist those little touchs of bigotry today that one has to smile away and pretend doesn't exist and hurt or be branded the angry black and thus difficult,AND the psychologically damaging effects of viewing favorably light skin blacks over dark skin blacks.

Langston Hughes was a skilled and astute observer and this is why much of his work continues to be popular and stand the test of time beyond simple entertainment value. THE WAYS OF WHITE FOLKS is definitely deserves and gets a 5 star rating!!!

He had been appointed the Cazique of Poyais, and bestowed with many honours by the local king of this unspoiled paradise. Bound in the Stories.

Neil's third book is his best work to date, in my opinion. A collection of short stories featuring 8 original and 3 previously published stories, "Bound In Love" is a must read. As with his previous collection, 'Evil Eye Charm', the stories of this book too share a common theme - love. Only, they speak of love in a twisted way. They deal with the toxicity of love and each of the stories bring forth an aspect of love that is seldom spoken about. I will review each of the stories one by one in the order they are in the book.

No Chocolate for You:- Easily one of my favorites, maybe because as a mother, this resonated the most with me. Being a parent is the toughest job in the world and Neil brings out the unarticulated fear of a mother beautifully. Do monsters really exist or do they dwell in our heads? Without giving away the story, I'll say that Neil scores full marks with this one.

The Shoe That Didn't Fit:- When love holds you in it's pincer-like grasp, you fail to see right from wrong. That is what happens to Manohar. Coming from a small town to the bustling metropolis of Bangalore, Manohar becomes the proverbial small fish in a big pond. Clueless and in the throes of unspoken love, he goes to the point of no return.
Neil beautifully captures the wide-eyed awe of Manohar, his unspoken love and the trauma of seeing his lady-love devastated. The ending leaves you breathless. Another flawless gem in this beautiful book.

No Greater Charm:- In this story, Neil explores the dilemma of knowing too much. What does one do when the life of a loved one hangs in balance? How far is too far?
The beautifully described Hooting - Tooting Circus becomes the backdrop of a story of love and fate. Neil paints a world with his words and the result is spell-binding.

At the Next Stop:- Not everything is as it seems. Sometimes truth is stranger than we think. In this story, we journey with a motion-sick man and look at a young couple through his eyes. They're obviously in love and look like a match made in heaven... or are they?
Simple story that keeps you smiling and wondering, till the end comes and pulls the rug from under your feet.

A Song Without Music:- In squalid poverty, the struggle to fill their stomachs robs a couple of their love. Through the eyes of a couple married for seven years, Neil shows the pain of losing love. The use of simple, accessible words create a beautifully stark world.

The Other Face of Love:- A different look into a mother-son relationship. Sometimes children don't understand their parents until it's far too late. The author manages to capture the emotions of both parties perfectly.

New Wine, Old Bottle:- This one left me smiling. I won't say much about it but this is one whimsical tale that leaves you smiling.

The Lion and The Queen:- With this tale, Neil attempts a historical fiction for the first time and he succeeds with flying colors. This is genre the author should definitely try and explore more, Another one of my favorites.

The Makeover:- The story first appeared on the e-Magazine UnBound. It had robbed my breath the first time and it did so again. Neil deftly handles a taboo topic and delivers a powerful message without being preachy.

Death of Parker Greene: Love and envy are two sides of the same coin and Neil masterfully handles the toss. He shows how quickly one can turn into the other.

Julie's Story:- A simple, straightforward story that shows love in a different light. Saying anything more would take away from the beauuty of the story, so I'll leave you to uncover the gem.

In closing, I'd say a big thank you to Neil D'Silva for collating such a beautiful book. Not once does he falter in these stories and he successfully shows what it's like to be "Bound In Love".

High entertainment quotient and a peek into infinite complexities of human relations

I have a confession. I have never given short stories much importance in comparison to novels. But slowly and steadily I am falling in love with this format of story telling. ‘Bound In love’ is a major contributing factor to my rising interest in short stories.

The stories in this collection are bound by a single theme, but each one of them has an identity of their own. Neil D’Silva has done immense justice to all in terms of their distinctive setting and subject which includes—human relations, workplace, profession, religion, as well as era. Each of the story is like a single, precious pearl bound with the string of love.

The collection boasts of mother’s love for her son, a colleagues excessive attachment, a wife’s love for her husband; be it they are slum dwellers or rulers of a kingdom. Neil D’Silva has covered the complete spectrum of love and its consequences; starting from affection, adulation, fear, to obsession.

If I have to choose which one I liked, I would list all of them. But still my personal favorites were ‘No Chocolate For you’, ‘No Greater Charm’, ‘At The Next Stop’, ‘A Song Without Music’, ‘New Wine, Old Bottle’, and ‘The Makeover’.

Mr. D’Silva is a master storyteller with firm grip over myriad human emotions. All the stories are narrated such that the settings came alive in front of my eyes. He made me think and marvel over each of the stories and the picture it invoked in my mind.

I highly recommend ‘Bound In Love’ for people looking for high entertainment quotient as well as getting a peek into infinite complexities of human relations.

Read it in One Sitting

I tend to dislike reading short stories, let alone a full book of them, and I was admittedly doubly hesitant when seeing that this was stories about love...however, I read D'Silva's bestseller "Maya's New Husband" in one day, loved it, and so decided to give this book a try. It defied my usual aversion to brevity and prompted me to read the whole thing in one sitting. Rather than fall into the category of yet another book on romance, "Bound in Love," explores the many forms that love can take as well as the divers potholes in human emotions that affection can, through the twists of fate, be plunged into. Whether examining parental intuitions, animal loyalty, or passion's more sadistic side, D'Silva does not let his fans down with these tales which span across different countries, cultures, and time periods. Much out of character, I find myself looking forward to his next collection of short stories.

The book was ok....it didn't have much clarity as far as I am concerned. There weren't many pictures....it was a look of reading about nothing....trust me don't waste your money...go to the library and see for yourself before buying it.

About the Author
An award-winning author of over fifteen historical romance novels, Margaret began her career at the age of eight when she concocted stories featuring a lovely damsel and a handsome, misunderstood thief. She's had a soft spot for handsome, misunderstood rogues ever since.

Unknowingly pursuing her destiny, Margaret graduated with distinction from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. She also demonstrated a facility for language by winningthe Winston Churchill Silver Medal for public speaking. She now utilizes this gift of the gab by giving workshops for various writing groups, including Romance Writers of America and the Canadian Authors Association.

What a disappointment!

After hearing many raves as to Ms. Moore's writing talent, I decided to purchase this book. I wish I hadn't been so influenced by the comments of others. This book was so slow going for me that I found myself skipping paragraphs at a time, something I've never done before.
I found the heroine irritating, argumentative, bossy, and razor tongued and lost sympathy for her early on. Its hard to believe that a woman who supposedly lived in that day and age could be so sharp tongued and opinionated - even to the king. While I liked the hero for the most part, he seemed wishy-washy at some points. The weak willed sort who doesn't really seem to stand for anything or stick to any opinion. He would be angry or annoyed at something one moment then in the bat of an eye he would become good-humored again and give in to the heroines whims.
If you really feel you must read this book, do yourself a favor and borrow it from the library first to see if you like it. I wish I had left it on the bookstore shelf.

Sir Richard Blyth, who lost his family's estate while he was out of the country with the king when the king is exiled, is told by this same king to marry Elissa, whose husband was the person who bought Richard's family estate, as a way to regain his home. Several things are wrong with this book. For starters, Richard was the heir to the family's estate so how could any transaction of sale be legal if it was done without his authority? It was his to sell, not his uncle's. Besides that, as a reward for Richard leaving England with the king and his support, wouldn't you think a king could get his home back? So the king forces Elissa to marry Richard. So now Richard can go home, of sorts. For Richard is not legally the owner nor would any children of his and Elissa become the new heir as she already has a son. Then Richard is forced to sign the marriage agreements moments before the wedding without reading it. It bascially emasculates Richard, gives him 0 dollars and no authority as his wife's advisor or any say so in the running of the estate. Please, the king would not have the ability to overturn that agreement either? Then, it seems that Richard's parents were orgy loving folks. And everyone from his old neighborhood, including Richard, thinks he is evil because of that. And, someone is trying to kill Elissa's son and she tells Richard that she thinks it is!...

Slow Going but a Good Read

I read others reviews before buying this book and I am glad that I decided to buy it anyway.

I personally found this book a good read. Sir Richard Blythe lost his birthright when he was out of the country with the King who had been exiled. When the King was restored to power Richard could not just walk back home and expect it to be his. It had been sold by his greedy uncle while he was away - even though he didn't have a right to. The King could have just given Richard his land back but that wouldn't have been fair to the new owner, Elissa Longbourne's son (she cannot own it because she is a woman but she is managing it until her young son comes of age). The property had been bought by Elissa's evil husband before he died; he was cruel to her and put her through hell; hardening her heart and toughening her up.

The King summons Elissa Longbourne to his castle without telling her why and she is soon ordered to marry Sir Richard Blythe if she wishes to keep her home this way Sir Richard can return to his family's estate and the current owners would not lose their stake in the property. Sadly, poor Sir Richard is given no money or power over the estate so he goes basically as a glorified guest. The book takes you on a journey through a forced marriage into a happy ending (sorry if I ruined it for you but it ends well - don't most romance novels).

The book made me laugh because it was funny and I could feel what the characters were feeling throughout the book - Miss Moore did a great job getting inside the minds of the characters and portraying how she would feel had she been them in that time.

Did I mention that Sir Richard is a playwright (hardly a noble profession for the time period) - he spends a good deal of the book "writing" his next play since Elissa at first refuses to allow him to help her manage the estate at all.

Some reviewers have commented negatively on Elissa's character and her outward hostility of the King and her soon to be husband but I found it refreshing. To me it reflected that Elissa had a hard life and she turned adversity into strength which has helped her survive. I felt bad for all she had to go through but was glad she and Sir Richard were able to "live happily ever after"
