I came across this book and purchased it out of pure curiosity. I am currently majoring in Psychology at UPenn and occasionally play video games in what little spare time I have. I figured heck why not, it's cheap and already has good reviews. It was an eye opener for sure. I never really gave a good thought as to why people behave the way they do in multiplayer gaming. My Pastor advised our congregation, of an AME Church to all purchase and read this book, it was great advice! He was newly assigned to our church and came with lots of changes that needless to say was met with lots of opposition and drama. This book put into perspective what he is trying to do with bringing our church out of traditions that no longer work, with respect to focusing on our main objective...WINNING AS MANY SOULS TO CHRIST AS WE CAN, and meeting our spiritual needs...AMEN!! Small massage business owner

Since my business is basically just me, I was a little hesitant to get this, but I'm really glad I did. It has lots of great information on not just how the big guys do spa work, but how small businesses can incorporate spa treats (even without a wet room!) It's a great reference on everything from hot stone to mud wraps. It explains the science of heat and cold spa therapy and how to make them work for you. I've gotten lots of great ideas as to how to expand my business. It was a great investment for me.

Technical introduction to digital low light photography

A very technical introduction to DSLR low light photography, but don't let that discourage you. This book is less about the effects and more about the nuts and bolts of how your sensor behaves in poorly lit situations: where does the ISO noise come from, how do you recover those details in shadows, what is the premise behind HDR, etc.

The author also spends a lot of time on the post-processing steps of your digital photos - from importing photos to evaluating noise reduction plugins to Photoshop. Having skipped the film photography step and gone directly to digital, this book made me appreciate all the tools and possibilities that are now available to every amateur.

Highly recommended, especially if you really want to understand how your camera works from the inside.

Very disappointing

I own several of Freeman's books. I found both "Mastering Black & White Digital Photography" and (especially) "The Photographer's Eye" to be quite useful, well written, and thoughtfully laid out.

I can't say the same for "The Complete Guide to Night and Lowlight Photography". The title is misleading to say the least; the book is almost entirely devoid of guidance on image capture, focusing instead on post-capture techniques in Photoshop.

As useful as Photoshop is, I would much rather get an excellent image and tweak it post-capture than have to recover a mediocre capture. This book will provide no help with the former.

Yet another disappointing Night Photography book

I really, truly wanted to love this book. I wanted to recommend it to my students, and I wanted it to finally be a useful Night Photography textbook. Unfortunately, it falls tremendously short of its potential on so many levels. As someone who has photographed at night for over 20 years, and taught Night Photography classes and workshops for 10 years, I feel qualified to make this judgment. The first and most obvious shortcoming is in the lack of inspiring, or even good Night Photographs. Most of the examples included are not only NOT night or low light images, but they are simply illustrations for the page, and not particularly good or interesting photographs. What a way to lose your audience in the first chapter.

To be fair, there is plenty of useful technical information, but it is generally not very well organized. (The first thing covered in the text is purple fringing and chromatic aberration!) Unfortunately, much of the information presented, while well researched and generally correct, is not really specific to the topic of the book.

Probably the greatest flaw of this book is that it does not embrace Night Photography for what it is. The author seems to have no grasp whatsoever of what it is that makes Night Photography special. In a nutshell, Night Photography is about the accumulation of time and light in an image- be it film or digital, and the way that the camera can record time in ways that the eye cannot see at night. Rather than show readers how to take advantage of the magic possible with long exposures and dramatic mixed lighting sources found at night, Freeman instructs the reader how to overcome these "challenges". Night photography is unpredictable and to a certain extent uncontrollable, and rather than embrace these things that make it unique, Freeman does everything he can to help his reader eliminate any and all risks. Night photography that "stays inside the lines" is boring. It is only by breaking the rules that Night Photographers create really exciting images, and there isn't more than a couple in this entire book. Imagine a 225 page book on Night Photography that devotes exactly THREE PARAGRAPHS to photographing by moonlight, and has zero examples of photographs taken by moonlight! There is also no chapter on light painting, which is another large omission.

There are at least a dozen books on the market supposedly about Night and low light photography, and they pretty much all focus on the "Low Light" part of the equation-Christmas lights, neon signs, fireworks, theatre or sporting events at night. This is not Night Photography, but simply how to extend daytime shooting methods into low light situations. Michael Freeman's disappointing book is just another one added to the pile. To date, Andrew Sanderson's "Night Photography" is the best text published on the subject, but it is almost entirely a black and white film book, and therefore of limited use in today's digital world. I'm sure that many people will find something useful in Freeman's book, and some will disagree with my assessment. In the end, it simply does not inspire the reader to go out and photograph at night, either with the text or especially the illustrations. It is certainly not for the novice.

The resource section in the back of the book lists only Freeman's other books, and none of the other published materials on Night and Low Light photography. His list of websites does not include links to any Night Photography sites or resources, most particularly [...] which is the undisputed champion of Night Photography online resources. He also offers no resources for classes or workshops on the subject, of which there are several, both in the US and abroad. There is a strong sense of community and sharing amongst Night Photographers, supported by both online and real world resources like The Nocturnes, local meet ups, and Flickr. Freeman is clearly not in touch with this community, which to me explains to a large degree why this book fails to hit the mark. As I said earlier in the review, there is a lot of useful technical information in this book, but it has no heart or soul.

Jill Waterman's new book, "Night and Low Light Photography, Professional Techniques from Experts for Artistic and Commercial Success" is much better than this, or any other book released on the topic to date. Need Vet mircobiology book....buy this one, don't waste money on others.

This is a GREAT, great book for learning veterinary micro. I've read and bought (unfortunately) a few books on the matter and it would have been nice if I had bought this one first....would have saved me some money, and I would have a more fluent understanding of the matter at this point.

This ambitious but technically unsophisticated first entry in a series features street-wise New Yorker Neal Carey, a 23-year-old graduate student of 18th-century literature. Neal is directed by Friends of the Family, a discreet, private investigation agency for which he works, to find Allie Chase, the teenage, drug-addicted daughter of a U.S. senator and presidential hopeful. Allie is somewhere in England and must be returned to the States before the Democratic Convention nine weeks away. Neal finds Allie but is forced to use his cunning to bring her home; at the same time he suspects someone from the agency is trying to kill him. Winslow guides us on a tour of punk 1976 London and introduces some colorful characters. But this first novel loses much of its punch because Winslow overloads beginning chapters with his hero's personal history rather than pacing the plot with relevant details. Neal is a distant hero whose escapades seem artificially linked.

excellent debut

This is a brisk, immensely enjoyable updating of the private eye and noir genres. When we first meet Neal Carey he's a graduate student at Columbia, working on a degree in 18th Century English Literature. But then he receives a call from his "Dad," Joe Graham, who turns out to be the one-armed dwarf who sort of adopted Neal when he was eleven years old and running the streets. A series of flashbacks shows Graham teaching Neal how to survive and grooming him for an eventual position trouble shooting for a shadowy organization called Friends of the Family, who look after the interests of the wealthy clients of the Kitteridge family bank in Providence, RI. Over the years, Neal learned everything from how to tail people to how to search a room without anyone ever knowing, and in the course of these unusual studies, Joe realized that Neal was a gifted student. Eventually the Friends send him to school, but now they need him for a special assignment.
It's 1976 and with Jimmy Carter likely to win the Democratic presidential nomination, he's expected to look for a northern running mate. Senator John Chase of Rhode Island has a decent shot at the job, but there's one significant skeleton in his closet : his troublesome teenage daughter has run away to London. Now it's up to Neal to go find her and bring her back in time for the Convention.
Neal is a streetwise and sassy hero, which makes for plenty of snappy banter. And the London he arrives in is in the midst of the birth of punk rock, which provides an unusually anarchic backdrop to the action. Add in a priceless first edition of Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle and a double-crosser within the Friends and you've got a mystery that cleverly mixes elements of classic noir with various innovations of the author's own. Imagine Oliver Twist by way of Raymond Chandler with a soundtrack by The Clash, and you'll capture something of the spirit of the story. It all makes for great fun and I look forward to reading the subsequent books in the series.

A Must Must Must Read!

This is a fabulous book, introducing the reader to fascinating characters (Neal Carey, Joe Graham, etc). As the first in a series of Neal Carey mysteries, this is the perfect book to drag you in and hook you, leaving you wanting more. The story is fascinating, and the driving plot makes this a page-turner. And how can you not fall in love with these charatcters?This is one of the best detective mysteries I've read, and I reccommend it to ALL my friends. READ IT!

How can a first book be this good?

Don Winslow's debut novel is scary good. The writing is completely self-assured. The comedic moments and sarcasm are well constructed. And he has created an interesting and hugely appealing main character for a series, and surrounded him with several interesting back plots and secondary characters.

This is a book that will teach you a lot. You'll learn things you didn't know about 18th century English literature, how to tail someone and not get caught, the best way to score drugs in London, and the finer points of picking a load for a shotgun. It will also show you that Don Winslow is a master at scattering gems like that through a book with a fast moving plot, richly drawn characters, and a very good sense of place.

I've read several other books by Winslow. I especially liked The Winter of Frankie Machine, California Fire and Life, and The Power of the Dog. I backtracked my way into the Neal Carey series and was amazed to find that his debut novel is as good as any of his best works.

I don't know how someone comes out of the starting gate with such a well-written first effort, but Winslow has done it. Bravo. I recommend this highly.

Reminder of my trip to Peru

I loved this book, especially since I had just been to Peru. The illustrations reminded me of all I had seen, including a floor full of guinea pigs, wonderful weavers and the things they made. And the story is so sweet.

During the hundred years examined in this volume, ordinary Germans discovered a new and powerful attachment to the nation. But throughout this period, national loyalties competed with preexisting loyalties to the locality and the region. The resulting tension made it difficult for Germans to assign clear priorities to one kind of symbolic attachment over another.
Focusing on the east German state of Saxony, the contributors to this volume refuse easy resolution of that tension, seeking instead to illustrate how local, regional, and national cultures commingled, diverged, and influenced each other over time. By considering both the erosion and the persistence of traditional identities and regional boundaries, these essays help to restore an appreciation of regional "ways of seeing," suggesting they really did matter--in their own right, and for the nation as a whole.
Topics considered include the expansion of a German reading public, Jewish emancipation, the formation of socio-moral milieus, working-class leisure, the expansion of the public sphere, the rise of consumer co-operatives, gendered attempts to fashion the "new" liberal man, and degradation rituals in the 1920s. Presenting to English-reading audiences the fruits of cutting-edge research conducted in Saxon archives since 1989, the contributors offer innovative ways to reassess the larger sweep of German history.
This book serves as a how-to guide for the study of any region in history. Beyond its primary appeal to European historians, it will also speak to students and scholars in comparative politics and sociology.
